EWU inductees set to be honored

Five former Eastern Washington University student-athletes and the school’s 1989 volleyball team will comprise the ninth class of inductees into the Eastern Athletics Hall of Fame as they will be honored in ceremonies on Oct. 10 in Cheney.

The new inductees include four former Eastern student-athletes who went on to illustrious coaching careers – Ed Fisher, Tracy Walters, Curt Byrnes and George Gablehouse. Combined, that foursome has already been inducted into seven halls of fame after winning numerous league, state and national titles.

The other individual inductee is national collegiate wrestling champion Mike Reed, who also won a state title at West Valley High School.

The 1989 volleyball team, led by previous individual inductees Pamela Parks (coach) and Juli Argotow (player), will be inducted on the 20th anniversary of its 25-7 finish. The Eagles won the Big Sky Conference (then Mountain West Conference) regular-season and tournament titles, and made the program’s first NCAA tournament appearance.

Administration

The University of Idaho’s athletic department has hired Tom Sanford as academic coordinator.

Sanford, who served a similar capacity at Washington State, mentored Vandals athletes the past year.

Baseball

Washington State University has hired Spencer Allen as assistant baseball coach, head coach Donnie Marbut announced.

Allen, who will coach first base, work with outfielders and coordinate the team’s short game, spent the last two years as an assistant at Purdue University. He replaces Travis Jewett.

Marbut also announced that pitching coach Gregg Swenson was promoted to head assistant coach.

Senior Games

Papermill Printing, a 3-on-3 senior men’s basketball team, is in San Francisco for the National Senior Games. Jon Heimbigner, Harvey DePew, Bill Maxey, Jack Soliday, Dan Steward and Doug Watson are members of the age 55-59 team that will play at Stanford University beginning Wednesday. Last weekend they won their eighth straight age group title during the State Senior Games at Tumwater High in Olympia, beating the Sandpoint Leftovers from Seattle 46-40; Linda Nielsen RE from Portland/Vancouver 55-37; and Nooners from Olympia 58-34.

Tennis

University of Idaho director of tennis Jeff Beaman recently served as a volunteer coach at a youth camp in Negril, Jamaica.

The job was part of the Professional Tennis Registry’s community development project to expand tennis to all parts of the world. Beaman coached a large group of youths in fundamentals and skills, and worked to educate local instructors and coaches.

Track and field

Michaelyn Mills of Mead High, 15, placed third in the javelin at the National Junior Olympics in Greensboro, N.C.

Mills threw 119 feet, 1 inch to best her previous best by more than 9 feet.
