Injured Ohio State men’s basketball star Evan Turner will miss eight weeks after breaking bones in his back when he fell while dunking during Saturday’s game against Eastern Michigan. Initial X-rays indicated no serious injuries, but Buckeyes athletic trainer Vince O’Brien said later tests found transverse process fractures of the second and third lumbar vertebra of Turner’s spine. The injury occurred after the junior swingman drove the lane and was fouled going up for a dunk with 13:27 left in the first half.

Cited Minnesota authorities say Vikings wide receiver Bernard Berrian has been cited for driving 104 mph in a 60-mph zone, days after police clocked teammate Adrian Peterson going 109 mph in a 55-mph area. Minnesota State Patrol Capt. Matt Langer said Saturday that Berrian was cited for speeding on Interstate 694 in Oakdale about 9:40 p.m. Monday.

Out Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said players suspended for being present at a campus fight will not make the Spartans’ upcoming bowl trip. Dantonio has kicked two players off the team and suspended eight others as police continue to investigate the Nov. 22 fight at a campus dorm involving players and fraternity members. The players suspended earlier this week include starting defensive back Chris L. Rucker and wide receivers Mark Dell and B.J. Cunningham.

Surgery Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird has undergone surgery to repair a fractured bone in his right front leg and is expected to return to racing next year. Trainer Tim Ice said that as long as rehab goes well the 3-year-old should make a full recovery. The horse was injured last month while training for the Dec. 6 Japan Dirt Cup.

Died Former pro wrestler Edward Fatu, who performed under the name “Umaga,” has died at 36. World Wrestling Entertainment spokesman Robert Zimmerman says he died Friday at a Houston hospital. Family friend Dawn Marie Psaltis said doctors indicated he died of a heart attack.
