Bears win crucial early matchup

Logan Ames defeated Caleb Erb in sudden-death overtime at 112 pounds Thursday to help Central Valley defeat visiting Mead 42-22 in a matchup of 1-0 Greater Spokane League wrestling teams.

The Bears dominated from 160 to 285, including pins by Tanner Davis (160) and Kolton Cole (189).

Mead state placer Jeremy Golding topped TJ Delmedico 8-3 at 135.

Also in the GSL, University won eight consecutive matches starting with senior Kevin Harder’s pin at 140, and the Titans (2-0) rolled to a 47-19 win over visiting Shadle Park. Taylor Keeton (145) followed Harder’s pin with an 8-2 win over Shadle’s Brenden Tarr. Darren Bunke of the Highlanders (1-1) opened the night with an 11-0 major decision at 130. … Ian Smith (135) edged Colby Barley 5-3 and Mike Sundheim (140) followed with a 13-2 major decision as Rogers (1-0) rolled to a 49-24 win over visiting Gonzaga Prep (0-2). … Freshman Jacob Clute’s 6-5 rally past sophomore Scott Hatfield at 125 launched North Central (1-1) to a 52-11 win over visiting Lewis and Clark. Clute trailed 5-1 and capped his comeback with a takedown in the final 20 seconds. Until then, the Tigers (0-2) led 12-0 with a forfeit and pins by Kyle Davis (112) and Jared Tso (119). … Drew Keller (130) pinned Nate Morgan at 1:33 to start East Valley (1-1) toward a 63-9 win at Ferris. Morgan placed fifth at last year’s district meet. Abe Minkler of the Saxons (0-2) defeated Braydon Berezay 5-3 at 152 with a reversal with 15 seconds left.

Boys basketball

Junior Connor Hill scored nine of his 17 points during a decisive 22-8 third quarter as Post Falls (3-1) pulled away for a 69-45 win over visiting West Valley in non-league play. Malcolm Colbert added 17 points and Shawn Reid had 12 rebounds and seven assists for the Trojans. Matt Roth scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half for the Eagles (0-2). … Elsewhere, Zach Lehman and Jake Mercer combined for 34 points and visiting St. Maries (3-1) broke from a 42-all tie with 21/2 minutes left to defeat Kootenai 56-44 at Harrison. Jacob and Dillon Zarpentine combined for 19 points for the Warriors (0-3). … Jamel Wilson and Casey McKinnon combined for 33 points to lead Mullan (2-2) to a 58-30 win over Project CDA at Coeur d’Alene High. Jake Wilson led the Tasmanian Devils (0-3) with 14 points and 15 rebounds. … Wes Billingslea scored 22 points in host Coeur d’Alene Charter’s win over 1-2 Lakeside (ID).
