CCS coaches receive honors
Success produced major recognition for the four fall-sports coaches at Community Colleges of Spokane. Two received regional accolades, two conference-wide honors.
Jenni Rosselli, in her fifth season as head coach of the Sasquatch, was named NWAACC volleyball coach of the year after leading CCS to the championship.
Sean McLachlan, in his first year as head coach, was selected the NWAACC coach of the year in men’s and women’s cross country after the Sasquatch men ran to a ninth straight conference championship and the women finished second.
Eastern Region coach of the year honors in men’s and women’s soccer went to the Sasquatch’s Kenny Krestian and Jim Martinson, respectively.
Krestian, a Spokane native in his fourth year at the helm of the CCS men, led the Sasquatch into the semifinals of the NWAACC championship tournament. Martinson, in his ninth year and twice previously honored for his coaching achievements, received the women’s Eastern Region award after leading CCS into the first round of the conference tournament.
•Football coaches Mike Morgan and Craig Culbertson of Colfax have been honored by the Washington State Coaches Association.
Morgan was named the WSCA District 7 head coach of the year and Culbertson the District 7 assistant coach of the year after a season in which their Bulldogs finished 12-1, the loss coming in the State 2B championship game. They will be honored at the WSCA conference in Bellevue on Jan. 22.
Bowling
Alex Earle and Bryce Engstrom started well and finished strongly to capture the Junior Bowlers Tour doubles tournament last Sunday at Valley Bowl.
But it wasn’t a cakewalk. After leading the four-game qualifying block, Earle and Engstrom faced some stiff competition in the four games of match play and slipped into second place heading into the five-team roll-offs.
Even in the finals it wasn’t easy. The title was decided on the last ball as they pulled out a 352-349 victory over top-seeded Chris Gray and Ryan Gately.
Nathan Rawley and Dalton Shears finished third, Dakota Roeder and Thomas Locke were fourth and Curtis Lindeman and Jesse Covington were fifth.
Shears had the day’s high average, a 209, but was edged 269-268 by Gately for high game. Heather Lundgren led the girls with a 239.
The next JBT is Jan. 3 at Lilac Lanes.
