Sports in brief: Roy, Blazers down Heat with big fourth

NBA: Brandon Roy scored 11 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter, LaMarcus Aldridge added 23 and the Portland Trail Blazers used a big run in the final minutes to beat the Miami Heat 102-95 at Miami.

Andre Miller scored 17 points and Martell Webster added 15 for Portland, which trailed by six with 5 1/2 minutes remaining.

Dwyane Wade scored 28 points and had 10 assists for the Heat, but he was 13 of 31 from the field and didn’t have a rebound for only the fourth time in his career.

Dirk-less Mavericks beat LeBron and Cavs: Tim Thomas took Dirk Nowitzki’s spot in the starting lineup and did a nice impression with 22 points, helping the Dallas Mavericks beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 102-95 at Dallas.

The Cavs had won five straight and their previous four against the Mavericks, but they trailed the entire second half. They pulled to 84-83 midway through the fourth quarter, but Dallas answered with a 12-4 spurt capped by 3-pointers from Jason Kidd and Jason Terry.

James had 25 points, six assists and three rebounds, but didn’t get enough help. Mo Williams scored only eight points and Shaquille O’Neal was just 1 of 7 for five points.

Bryant scores 28, Lakers beat Pistons: Kobe Bryant scored 28 points and helped the Los Angeles Lakers build a big lead in a 93-81 victory over the Detroit Pistons at Detroit.

Los Angeles closed a trip with a four-game winning streak and an NBA-best 22-4 record.

Sam Houston State rolls past Auburn

College men: At Auburn, Ala., Gilberto Clavell scored 34 points, going 14-of-17 from the field, to lead Sam Houston State to a 107-89 upset win over Auburn (5-6) for the school’s first victory against a Southeastern Conference opponent.

Corey Almond added 25 points and Lance Pevehouse had 13 off the bench for the Bearcats (7-3), which shot 57.6 percent from the field.

Defense helps Irish crush Charlotte

College women: Ashley Barlow scored a season-high 19 points and fourth-ranked Notre Dame forced 43 turnovers in a 90-31 victory over Charlotte at South Bend, Ind.

The Irish (10-0) put together runs of 16-0 to start the game and 30-3 in the second half, and five players had at least three steals. Notre Dame also held Charlotte (5-6) to 24.5 percent shooting, the first time the 49ers shot below 30 percent in a game since 2006.

The Irish had more points in the paint (32) than the 49ers had points.

Shannon McCallum led Charlotte with 10 points.

Huet, Blackhawks blank Red Wings

NHL: Cristobal Huet made 20 saves for his second straight shutout, and Duncan Keith had a goal and an assist to lead the Chicago Blackhawks to their fourth victory in a row, 3-0 over the Detroit Red Wings at Chicago.

Brian Campbell and Dustin Byfuglien also scored to help Chicago move back into first place in the Central Division. Detroit, shut out for the fourth time in its last 15 games, has lost two straight.

Italians go 1-2 in Alta Badia giant slalom

Skiing: Italian skiers Max Blardone and Davide Simoncelli finished 1-2 in the Gran Risa giant slalom on home snow in Alta Badia, Italy.

Blardone led both legs and clocked a two-run combined time of 2 minutes, 35.76 seconds for his fifth World Cup victory – all in giant slalom. Simoncelli finished 0.43 seconds behind and Cyprien Richard of France, who was sixth in the first leg, was 1.63 seconds back in third.

Ted Ligety was the top American, finishing seventh in 2:37.77.

Aufdenblatten wins super-G, Vonn third: Franzi Aufdenblatten posted her first World Cup victory in leading a 1-2 Swiss finish in a super-G at Val d’Isere, France, and Lindsey Vonn placed third to retake sole possession of the lead in the overall standings.

The 28-year-old Aufdenblatten upset the favorites to finish in 1 minute, 26.43 seconds on the Oreiller-Killy course, 0.23 seconds ahead of Nadia Styger. Vonn was 0.26 seconds back in third, and regained sole possession of the overall World Cup lead with 581 points, 50 more than friend and rival Maria Riesch of Germany. Kathrin Zettel of Austria is third with 384 points.

Ramsay wins South African Open

Golf: Richie Ramsay of Scotland birdied the first hole of a playoff to defeat Shiv Kapur of India and win the South African Open at Paarl, South Africa.

Ramsay shot a 7-under 65 to finish at 13-under 275 at Jack Nicklaus-designed Pearl Valley and move past overnight leader Pablo Martin of Spain.

Ramsay had a putt on No. 18 to win the championship, but it went just left, forcing the playoff.

Kapur had to lay up in the playoff, also on No. 18, while Ramsay reached the green in two. His 15-foot eagle putt came up just short and he tapped in for the win.

Burke first American to lead biathlon WC

Miscellany: In a first for a U.S. biathlete, Tim Burke took over the lead in the World Cup standings by placing sixth in a men’s 12.5-kilometer pursuit in Pokljuka, Slovenia.

Evgeny Ustyugov of Russia won the race, missing two targets but finishing in 34 minutes, 50.9 seconds to beat Roland Lessing of Austria by 9.3 seconds.

Burke missed three targets and was 37.4 seconds behind Ustyugov, but moved up one spot in the overall standings.

“This really is a historic moment for all of us,” said Max Cobb, U.S. Biathlon’s executive director.

The U.S. has never won an Olympic medal in biathlon, a sport long dominated by Europeans.

Lange wins in WC bobsled, Holcomb 2nd: Two-time Olympic champion Andre Lange won a four-man bobsled World Cup race on his home track, and American Steven Holcomb bounced back from a crash the day before to place second.

Lange and his team – Rene Hoppe, Kevin Kuske and Martin Putze – finished 0.76 seconds ahead of Holcomb on the challenging track at Altenberg, Germany.

Holcomb crashed in Saturday’s two-man race with Justin Olsen, but they didn’t balk at getting back on the track with the other members of the defending world champion four-man crew: Steve Mesler and Curt Tomasevicz.
