Spokane Area Swim Team fifth

Coleman Allen won five of six events, capturing high-point honors and leading Spokane Area Swim Team to a fifth-place finish at the Washington State Senior Swimming Championships last weekend in Federal Way, Wash.

Allen, a student at Lewis and Clark, was a state champion in the 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 200 back and 200 fly, and placed third in the 200 free.

Michelle Kazuba of West Valley swam the 200 IM, 50 back and 100 breaststroke and qualified as a disabled athlete to compete in the Can/Am Games in San Antonio in March.

Other SAST members and their schools with top-eight finishes: Ben Lovell (Oaks), sixth both 50 and 100 fly; Kyle Marsh (Shadle Park), sixth 50 breast; Alex Martinek (University), fifth 500 free, third 100 IM, eighth 1,650 free, eighth 200 back; Emri Moore (Mead), second 500 free, fifth 200 fly.

Other SAST finalists: Emily Renzini (Mt. Spokane), Melissa Peplinski (Central Valley), Kylee Probert (LC), Amber Amr (Shadle), Amani Amr (Shadle), and Kelby Lind (Gonzaga Prep).

Mason Shaw of SAST, a student at Lake City who has signed a letter of intent with Stanford, placed 21st in the 400 IM and 24th in the 200 IM at the ATT USA Swimming National Championships Dec. 3-5 in Federal Way. Moore competed in three events in her first national.

•Allen was a finalist in all four of his events at the Speedo Junior National Championships at Ohio State University Dec. 9-12 with his best finish a sixth in the 100 fly. Renzini and Moore also competed in four events.

Baseball

Frank Wintersteen of Spokane, who has been umpiring for 25 years, has been selected to work the Little League West and Northwest region finals in San Bernardino, Calif., next August. Winners of the two regionals advance to the Little League World Series for 11-12-year-olds in Williamsport, Pa.

Wintersteen has umpired in the Little League program for five years and last summer worked the state tournament.

Basketball

Winners in five divisions were crowned at the Elks Lodge 228 annual Hoop Shoot last weekend at Northwest Christian.

The winners: Nicholas Dryman, boys 8-9; Bryn Anderson, girls 8-9; Anthony Smith, boys 10-11; Lacie Hull, girls 10-11; and Mick Smoot, boys 12-13.

College scene

Marketa Hanzlova of North Idaho College, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter from Liberec, Czech Republic, was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-American first team in volleyball.

Hanzlova ranked 25th in the nation with an average of 3.28 kills per set.

Fei Gao of NIC, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter from Hangzhou, China, received honorable mention.

Jessica Summers, a Western Washington senior transfer from Idaho, was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference player of the week in women’s basketball after scoring 99 points and grabbing 43 rebounds in four games in two tournaments, earning MVP honors in both, as the Vikings went 3-1.

Jon Clift, a Central Washington senior from Ferris, scored 31 points to earn all-tournament honors for the Wildcats’ men’s basketball team in the Great Western Shootout in Las Vegas Dec. 17-18.

Cross country

Josh Alexander from Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls, a freshman at Everett Community College, finished fifth in the Young Men’s 5K in 16 minutes, 23 seconds at the USATF Junior Olympic National Championships Dec. 12 in Reno, Nev., to earn All-America honors. Alexander runs for Federal Way Track Club.
