Retires Former Pro Bowl quarterback Trent Green has decided to retire after 15 seasons and plans to pursue a career in broadcasting, his agent announced Friday. Green, an eighth-round draft pick by San Diego in 1993, was released by St. Louis in February after playing three games in his second stint with the Rams last season.
•Former Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson is quitting professional tennis after more than 15 years on the ATP tour. The 34-year-old Swede won nine singles titles and reached a top ranking of No. 7 in 2002. Injuries forced him to take long breaks from the game in recent years.
Delayed Former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress will have to wait a while longer before he knows the legal consequences of accidentally shooting himself with an unlicensed pistol. Defense lawyer Benjamin Brafman said Burress will appear in court Monday for a brief hearing. Brafman said Burress and prosecutors have yet to agree on a plea deal and the case will be adjourned until September.
•A judge has delayed a decision on whether a suspect in the slaying of Washington Redskins star defensive back Sean Taylor can withdraw his guilty plea. A hearing was set Friday in Miami on the request by 21-year-old Venjah Hunte. But after a private conference with attorneys, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Dennis Murphy postponed the issue for another week.
Issued Injured golfer Ken Green issued a statement thanking those who have offered him support since the accident that killed his brother and girlfriend. Green remains hospitalized with unknown injuries and is in fair condition. He has declined Associated Press interview requests, but wanted to thank the golf community.
Requested Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones has told the governing body of German soccer that he wants to play for the U.S. national team. Jones has dual German and U.S. citizenship and has played three exhibitions for Germany.
Announced Two-time Tour de France winner Laurent Fignon says he has advanced cancer in the digestive system and is undergoing chemotherapy. Fignon announced his illness on Thursday. He says doctors told him the cancer probably wasn’t caused by taking performance- enhancing drugs during his career.
