Cowie, Webster fastest

Shawn Cowie and Ken Webster grabbed the top spots after the completion Saturday of NHRA qualifying at Spokane County Raceway.

Cowie set the pace for Top Alcohol Dragster with a 5.465-second, 265.222 mph pass. Joey Severance was second.

Webster finished first in Top Alcohol Funny Car competition with a 5.741-second, 252.05 mph run. Current divisional points leader Brian Hough was second.

Racing continues today with gates opening at 8 a.m. Eliminations in various classifications will begin a 9 a.m. Eliminations in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car begin at noon.

Baseball

The Spokane RiverHawks (2-3) smothered the host Wenatchee Apple Sox 18-1 to split a West Coast League doubleheader. Wenatchee (4-1) rallied from a 4-1 deficit to win the opener 5-4.

The teams played the pair of seven-inning games after their single game was rained out Friday.

The RiverHawks’ 17-run margin was the largest suffered by the Apple Sox in their 10-year history.
