GU outlasts Portland

Gonzaga (9-13, 4-4) fought back from two fourth-game match points by West Coast Conference volleyball opponent Portland (5-18, 1-7) to win 18-25, 26-24, 20-25, 29-27, 20-18 Saturday in Portland.

Michelle Boevers finished with 19 kills, two aces and three blocks and Emily Johnson added 12 kills for GU, which won its second straight five-set match.

•No. 21 Washington State (16-6, 5-6 Pac-10) hit at a .131 percentage against No. 18 Arizona (16-6, 5-6), costing the Cougars in a 25-18, 20-25, 25-11, 25-21 loss to UA in Tucson. Casssie Robbins led with 14 kills, but errors hurt WSU’s chances with Arizona tallying 30 kills between Tiffany Owens and Whitney Dosty.

The Wildcats also won the defensive edge with 54 digs to WSU’s 47. WSU’s Oceana Bush led with a match-high 15 digs.

•Despite losing the first two games by a total of four points, Whitworth (9-16, 5-9) could not stop No. 15 Pacific Lutheran (18-6, 14-0) from rolling 25-23, 25-23, 25-20 to remain unbeaten in Northwest Conference play. Kaimi Rocha finished with a double double, contributing 10 kills and 12 digs and Ka’ipo Rocha added eight kills and six blocks.

•Chenoa Coviare had 16 kills and Hayley Hills added 15, but Eastern Washington (15-8, 9-3 Big Sky) fell to Montana (10-12, 6-5) 25-21, 25-22, 19-25, 25-23 in Missoula. The Eagles held the edge over Montana in kills 60-54, but they committed 27 errors for a .221 percentage.

The loss dropped the Eagles out of a tie for first place as Portland State swept Montana State to move a game up on the Eagles.

Women’s soccer

Whitworth (15-3, 12-2) clinched second place in the Northwest Conference with a 2-1 win over Willamette (8-8-1, 7-6) in Salem, Ore. Lindsey Oakes scored the Pirates’ first goal of the match in the fifth minute and added an assist to Jenny Krzymowski in the 75th minute to add to the lead against Willamette.

•Margo Hickman scored a pair of goals and Walla Walla CC (16-1, 13-0 NWAACC) rolled with four in the second half to beat Community Colleges of Spokane (7-4-4, 7-3-3) 5-1 in Walla Walla. Tabitha Grow kicked home the only goal of the match for the Sasquatch with an assist from Amanda Schmedding.

•North Idaho College wrapped up its regular season with a 2-1 win against Gonzaga University’s club team in Couer d’Alene. NIC turns its attention to the NJCAA District B playoffs in Overland Park, Kan., where it awaits Friday’s winner of Laramie County CC and the No. 1 seed out of Region 6. NIC will play Saturday.

Men’s soccer

Brent Zahn gave Whitworth (11-2-3, 9-1-2) an early 2-0 lead against Willamette (4-13, 3-9) and the Pirates took sole possession of first place in the Northwest Conference with a 5-2 victory in Salem, Ore.

•Community Colleges of Spokane (5-8-4, 5-3-3 NWAACC) lost the total shots battle 22-7 against Walla Walla CC (10-3-1, 7-3-1), but keeper Ryan Dixon notched nine saves and the Sasquatch came away with a 0-0 tie in Walla Walla.
