Meeting Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott said he will meet with suspended Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount and school officials over possible reinstatement. Blount was suspended for the season after punching Boise State Byron Hout player in the aftermath of Oregon’s 19-8 loss to the Broncos in the season opener. Scott said he’ll meet with Blount, Oregon counsel, university president Richard Lariviere, athletic director Mike Bellotti and coach Chip Kelly and members of his staff. Scott said the university has not made formal moves to reinstate Blount and his role “completely depends on the university and whether they want the penalty revisited.”
Sold A court-ordered auction of former Nebraska football player Aaron Taylor’s championship hardware brought in $28,500. It took about 30 minutes to sell Taylor’s seven championship rings and his Outland Trophy on Saturday. Bids were taken in person and online, with the bronze statue netting the highest bid of $6,800. The diamond-encrusted rings sold for $2,000 to $5,900. The auction was forced by the failure of the Husker-themed Scarlet and Cream Letter Club restaurant and Taylor’s resulting bankruptcy. Taylor started the restaurant in Omaha with other ex-Nebraska players.
Withdraws Tennis star Serena Williams withdrew from the U.S. team that will face Italy Saturday and next Sunday in the Fed Cup final, deciding she needs to rest after a long season. Vania King replaces Williams on the roster.
Out New Jersey Nets point guard Devin Harris said he’ll be sidelined at least a week because of an injured right groin.
Hospitalized Apprentice jockey Amanda Casey remains in intensive care after being kicked in the side by a horse at Aqueduct in New York. Joe Ceraulo, her agent, said Casey had a bruised liver and internal bleeding after being kicked by Karakorum Jete before the ninth and final race Friday. She was taken by ambulance to North Shore University Hospital. Ceraulo said doctors didn’t have to perform surgery. He expects the 26-year-old Casey to remain hospitalized for at least a week. The native of South Glens Falls, N.Y., began riding in 2007 and has 16 wins in 326 mounts.
