Roundup: Cougars win 8th straight on road
Ali Fenter and Carly Dobratz each scored in the first half Sunday and No. 19 Washington State cruised to a 2-0 Pac-10 soccer victory over Oregon at Eugene, Ore.
The Cougars (13-4-1, 5-1-1 Pac-10) took a 1-0 lead as Fenter scored off a free kick after a yellow card by the Ducks (8-9-1, 0-7-0) in the 41st minute.
Dobratz followed with a goal just 1:20 later off a free kick from Kiersten Dallstream. The win gives the Cougars eight straight road victories, a school record.
• No. 25 Oregon State scored a late goal to beat comeback-minded Washington 2-1 at Corvallis, Ore.
The Huskies (11-4-3, 3-2-2 Pac-10) tied it on McKenna Waitley’s goal in the 68th minute, but the Beavers (11-6-1, 3-4-0) scored in the 79th minute to seal the win.
• UC Irvine scored goals in the 14th and 84th minutes, topping visiting Gonzaga 2-0 at Irvine, Calif. The Anteaters (12-6-2) were outshot 12-10 by the Bulldogs (8-11), but keeper Kala Gabler saved all eight GU shots.
• Britta Bourne scored three second-half goals and the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine (7-11-1, 3-5 WAC) overcame a two-goal deficit to beat the Idaho Vandals 3-2 at Moscow, Idaho. Jill Flockhard and Ashley Perez scored for the Vandals (9-10, 2-6).
• Whitworth’s Lindsey Oakes scored an early goal and the Pirates (15-3, 12-2 NWC) survived to win 1-0 over the host Linfield Tigers (9-9-1, 6-8-1) at McMinnville, Ore.
Men’s soccer
Whitworth (12-2-3, 10-1-2 NWC) closed in on its third-straight Northwest Conference title, winning 4-1 over host Linfield (5-12-1, 4-9) at McMinnville, Ore. Cameron Bushy, Keith Kirsch, Travis Gutierrez and Justin Mikkola each scored for the Pirates.
• The Gonzaga Bulldogs (6-7-3, 3-5-1 WCC) scored five second-half goals en route to a 5-0 win over the visiting Saint Mary’s Gaels (10-3-3, 6-2-1). Nick Barclay’s penalty kick goal in the 57h minute put the Bulldogs ahead. GU outshot St. Mary’s 21-7.
• Washington (4-5-6, 1-1-4 Pac-10) and No. 18 Stanford (10-4-2, 4-3-2) played to a 0-0 draw at Seattle. The Huskies outshot the Cardinal 24-7, with goalie Rylan Hawkins making two saves.
Hockey
After falling behind in the first period, the Spokane Braves (15-5-0-1) scored four straight goals on the way to a 4-1 victory over the Golden Rockets (12-6-0-0). Cash Ulrich saved 20 of 21 shots.
