Sports in brief: Hawks derail Blazers with overtime win

Basketball: Joe Johnson scored eight of his 35 points in overtime and the Hawks solved Portland’s defense in time to beat the Trail Blazers 99-95 on Monday night in Atlanta.

Josh Smith added 20 points and 16 rebounds for Atlanta, which extended its winning streak to five with the victory in the matchup of division leaders.

Rudy Fernandez led Portland with 19 points, including a tying 3-pointer at the end of regulation.

The Trail Blazers had won six straight games.

•Mavericks edge Bucks: Dirk Nowitzki hit a fallaway 18-footer as time expired in overtime to give the Dallas Mavericks a 115-113 victory over the Bucks in Milwaukee.

Nowitzki finished with 32 points and 11 rebounds.

•Rodman detained in Germany: Former NBA star Dennis Rodman has been temporarily detained in Germany after a Berlin hotel said he skipped out on a $5,100 hotel bill.

Senior prosecutor Juergen Bauer said that Rodman had played in a “USA Legends of Basketball” exhibition game in the western town of Trier and threw a party afterward at his hotel.

Bauer said the game’s organizers had agreed to pick up the tab for Rodman’s overnight hotel stay, but not an additional $5,100 for beverages consumed at the party.

Blue Jackets squeak by Oilers in shootout

NHL: Jakub Voracek scored the winner in the fourth round of the shootout to lift the Blue Jackets to a 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Columbus, Ohio.

After Voracek’s goal, Mathieu Garon stopped Gilbert Brule to secure Columbus’ fourth win in five games.

•Kings rally for SO victory: Defenseman Jack Johnson scored the only goal in the shootout, and the Los Angeles Kings rallied to defeat the Florida Panthers 4-3 in Sunrise, Fla.

Johnson and Jarrett Stoll scored power-play goals and Randy Jones scored short-handed for the Kings, whocame back from a 2-0 deficit and closed out a five-game road trip at 3-2.

Wall helps UK avoid early season loss

College basketball: Highly heralded Kentucky freshman John Wall scored 19 points – including the game-winning jumper with 0.5 seconds remaining – to lift the fourth-ranked Wildcats to a 72-70 win over Miami of Ohio in Lexington, Ky.

After Miami’s Kenny Hayes hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 70 with six seconds left, Wall raced down the floor and pulled up from the wing. The ball fell through the net and Wall raced up the floor pounding his chest in celebration as the crowd roared.

Titans’ owner fined over obscene gesture

Football: The NFL has fined Titans owner Bud Adams $250,000 for making an obscene gesture at Buffalo fans while celebrating Tennessee’s victory over the Bills on Sunday.

Commissioner Roger Goodell notified Adams of the fine, and league spokesman Greg Aiello said it is for conduct detrimental to the NFL. Adams was seen making the gesture while in his luxury suite and again on the field after Sunday’s 41-17 victory.

•Rams lose WR Burton: The St. Louis Rams have lost leading wide receiver Keenan Burton for the rest of the season, the result of a right knee injury in Sunday’s 28-23 loss to New Orleans.

•Boise State tight end out: Boise State tight end Richie Brockel is expected to miss the rest of the season with a foot injury.

•UNLV fires coach: UNLV has fired coach Mike Sanford after five losing seasons, a 15-43 record and no bowl appearances.

•Michigan failed to keep logs: The University of Michigan says the beleaguered football program failed to file mandatory monthly logs that track how much players work out and practice.

The NCAA is investigating whether Michigan violated its rules by holding more training sessions than is allowed.
