Around the Blogosphere
Here’s a little guide to get you caught up on what you might have missed the last few weeks in Spokane’s blogosphere. Everything from winter farmers’ markets, a local favorite closing, worm composting, green innovation and hug a farmer day. Read on.
Craig Goodwin, our DTE blogging cohort over at
Year of Plenty,
was busy last week keeping everybody up to date on
Spokane’s winter farmers’ markets
, his
perspective on locavorism
, and a
celebratory day we missed out on
(though we’re advocating that we celebrate this day every day).
From Craig:
Here is the rundown on winter farmers’ markets Spokane area for 2009-2010.
Millwood Farmers’ Market
: Wednesdays from 2-6pm at the
Crossing Youth Center
.
Downtown Community Building Market
: Thursdays: 11am - 3pm at the
Community Building
.
Coeur d’Alene Saturday Market
: 11am - 3pm at at the
Plaza
right across the street from the Resort
Fresh Abundance
Community Roots Market
:
Second Saturdays of each month during the winter (my info on this is a little iffy and I’m not sure about times. Give them a call to find out.)
Craig also wrote about the closing of Natural Start Bakery, a story reported by our friends over at Spokane Food Blog , and asked the question, “What does the future hold for the local food movement in the Spokane area? Check out his post and join the conversation.
And here’s something we missed , “…. NOW THEREFORE, I, Christine O. Gregoire, Governor of the state of Washington, do hereby proclaim November 20, 2009 as “Thank You Farmers and Ranchers Day…”
Mark your calendars - save the date - start saving food scraps,
whatever you have to do to remember that on Saturday, December 12, Mariah McKay will host a worm bin workshop at Fresh Abundance.
“If you like the smell of the forest freshly covered in dew on a crisp morning during a camping trip, then you will like the smell of a worm bin. Yes, that is right. A bin full of slimy, wriggling little red worms is worth a whiff or two,”
this from a recent Spovangelist post all about vermicomposting -

An unprecedented form of communication for a Councilmember, check out
Jon Snyder’s site
. While parts of the page are still under construction, stop by the
impressive citizen resources section
where you can find information on City Council activity and complete streets. Tonight is his swearing ceremony at 5pm, City Council Chambers. Look for many bikes parked outside.
And finally -
thanks to a sports blog
, yep, a sports blog - we learned about
TIME magazine’s list of 50 best innovations of 2009
. But most importantly we learned about v
ertical farming
. Seriously, this has to be the coolest thing on that list. Yeah, it’s not the sexiest or most jaw dropping - but it’s so practical. Thanks
Casey and Brandon at Just South of North
for posting about this list. Check it out yourself
