Cougars draw with Huskies

Pac-10 rivals Washington and Washington State battled through two overtimes, with neither team gaining the advantage in a 1-1 tie Friday in a women’s soccer match in Seattle.

WSU (7-3-1) tied it in the 85th minute on a goal from Elysse Van Leer and a penalty kick by the Huskies (8-2-2) was blocked in the first overtime to preserve the deadlock.

UW outshot the Cougars 17-8, but Meghan Berlingo collected five saves to aid the visitors.

•North Idaho College (3-5-4) scored five goals in the first half and three in the second in an 8-2 blowout victory of visiting Western Wyoming CC. Brittany Cook and Lauren Linford each scored three goals on four shots for NIC while Justine Bowman added a pair of scores.

•Converting just one of 13 scoring tries, Idaho (8-6, 1-2) saw its four-game home winning streak end in a 2-1 defeat to Western Athletic Conference foe Nevada (5-8, 2-0). Ellie Stott scored in the 80th minute to break a 1-1 tie for the Wolf Pack after Sari Morrison tied it for Idaho.

•Kelly Lunde scored once in the second half and teammate Sidonia Davin booted home the winner in overtime to give Whitworth (10-2, 7-1) a 2-1 Northwest Conference victory over Lewis & Clark College (2-5-4, 1-5-1) in Portland.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga needed extra time against West Coast Conference opponent Loyola Marymount but won the match 2-1 on a goal from Tye Perdido in Spokane. LMU (6-4, 1-1) scored early in the second half to take a 1-0 lead before Nick Love tied it for the Bulldogs (4-4, 1-2) in the 74th minute and Perdido ended it with his fourth goal of the season.

•Washington (4-4-3, 1-0-2) earned its first Pac-10 win with a 2-0 shutout of California (7-3, 1-1) in Berkeley, Calif. Rylan Hawkins tallied six saves in goal and the Huskies’ Matt Van Houten and Brad Keller scored a goal apiece.

Volleyball

For just the second time in Pac-10 play, Washington State (14-2, 3-2) could not pull out a win, falling to Stanford (10-4, 3-1) 25-23, 20-25, 25-22, 25-22 in Palo Alto, Calif. The Cardinal took over after winning Game 3 and raced out to an early lead in the final game behind Alix Klineman and Casidy Lichtman, who combined for 39 kills. Jackie Albright had 12 kills and 11 digs for the Cougars.

•No. 15 California (8-6, 1-3) gave visiting No. 3 Washington (15-0, 5-0) a run in Games 2 and 3, but the Huskies had too much offense, hitting .490 as a team, to notch the sweep 25-16, 25-22, 25-23. The Bears came within one point in the final game, but Airial Salvo ended it with her 11th kill of the match.

•Despite 13 kills from both Hayley Hills and Chenoa Coviare, Eastern Washington (10-7, 5-1) suffered its first Big Sky defeat, losing 23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-17 to Portland State (11-6, 5-1). EWU hit .140 for the match, losing to the Vikings for the first time in 14 meetings.

•Fei Gao slammed 12 kills and Aubree Chesnut led with four blocks as North Idaho College (22-3, 4-0 SWAC) swept host Snow College (10-10, 1-2) 25-20, 25-22, 25-16 at Ephraim, Utah.

Hockey

Trailing 1-0 after one period, the Spokane Braves (7-4-0-1) scored three unanswered goals to beat Beaver Valley (3-6-1) 3-1 at Fruitvale, British Columbia. Rance Hughes and Chip Petrino scored in the second to give the Braves the lead.
