Vandalism causing expensive damage in Idaho forests

Officials seeking public’s help in reporting crimes

Idaho Panhandle National Forest officials are asking the public to help them curb vandalism that’s already caused expensive damage to facilities at popular recreation areas. “We are urging anyone who witnesses vandalism to report it as soon as possible,” said Randy Swick, Coeur d’Alene River District ranger. Recent vandalism includes: •Glidden Lakes outhouse destroyed at lower lake. Perpetrators used a vehicle to knock over the outhouse and damage the foundation. •Elsie Lake outhouse damaged: broken windows and damaged door. •Shoshone Park outhouses damaged and garbage and broken glass in picnic pavilion. Replacing vault toilets can cost $15,000 apiece, Swick said. To report vandalism, call the Coeur d’Alene District at (208) 765-7316 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. After hours and on weekends, contact the Shoshone County Sheriff at (208) 556-1114. Obtain as much information as possible, including descriptions of vehicles and individuals and license plate numbers.
