Indians bag Bears

Spokane captures series from likely playoff rival

YAKIMA – Before leaving for Yakima, Spokane Indians manager Tim Hulett said his team wanted to make a statement with the Northwest League regular season winding down.

Consider the message delivered. Ben Henry (4-3) pitched five effective innings and three relievers combined for four hitless innings as the Indians defeated the Yakima Bears 3-2 Friday at Yakima County Stadium to win the series 2-1.

The teams are almost assured of meeting again in nine days in the NWL divisional playoffs. Spokane won the first half and Yakima, which leads the second half by two games over Spokane, will likely soon eliminate Boise and Tri-City from playoff contention.

Spokane, 7-5 against Yakima in the regular season, would open the playoffs Sept. 6 at Yakima and host the Bears the rest of the best-of-3 series.

Spokane broke a 2-all tie in the sixth inning Friday against Corey Davisson (2-1). Jurickson Profar led off with a double and scored on Kellin Deglan’s one-out sacrifice fly to center.

Jorge Marban, Ryan Rodebaugh and Colby Killian, who earned his fifth save, blanked the Bears from that point.

• The Indians announced that their final regular-season home game, Monday against Boise, will be televised by SWX. The Indians’ last televised game was in 1994.
