Released Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. spent a night in a Las Vegas jail before his release Friday on a misdemeanor battery warrant stemming from an allegation that the boxer poked a security guard in the face last month outside his home. Mayweather was arrested just before midnight Thursday at the posh Bellagio resort on the Las Vegas Strip and booked early Friday into the Clark County jail without bail.

Announced Goalkeeper Kasey Keller will retire after the 2011 season, his 23rd in professional soccer. The 41-year-old former U.S. national team goalkeeper agreed to a contract for next season, his third with the Seattle Sounders FC.

Hired Vanderbilt confirmed that it hired Maryland offensive coordinator James Franklin as the Commodores’ new football coach, their third this year. He replaces Robbie Caldwell, who resigned Nov. 27. Caldwell took over July 14 when Bobby Johnson unexpectedly retired.

Sidelined Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger will have surgery on his broken right foot and miss four to six weeks. The 36-year-old will have the surgery to repair the broken bone sustained in a victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night.

• Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Jean- Sebastien Giguere is out indefinitely after re-aggravating a groin injury during Thursday night’s game in Calgary. Giguere was listed as day-to-day, but the 33-year-old indicated he may be sidelined longer. He already missed two games last week with the same injury.

Signed Akron soccer coach Caleb Porter has signed a six-year contract extension just days after leading the Zips to the school’s first NCAA championship in any sport. Porter’s new deal keeps him at Akron through the 2020 season. Porter has posted a 90-13-10 record over five seasons.

Voted U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell has been voted player of the year by the Golf Writers Association of America. McDowell received 87 votes to beat Jim Furyk (61) and Martin Kaymer (51). The Northern Irishman won three times this year and captured the decisive match in the Ryder Cup for Europe against the United States.
