Turf red, not ledger
In response to James A. Nelson’s letter (Feb. 14, “Seeing Red,”) Eastern Washington University would like to clarify one important fact.
While EWU respects and welcomes everyone’s opinion on the red turf we plan to install in our stadium, the university wants to make it clear this will not drain millions from the school’s budget, as stated by Nelson.
As reported before, the cost of the turf is covered by a generous donation from Eastern alumnus and current NFL player Michael Roos. The remaining cost of the project will come only from private donations. No tax dollars are being used to fund this project.
Additionally, the turf will help Eastern save nearly $12,000 in field maintenance and nearly 300,000 gallons of water annually.
Given the difficult budget times, this project has been carefully thought out, and EWU is receiving amazing support from our boosters as we move forward.
