Reinstated Tennessee basketball players Melvin Goins and Cameron Tatum will rejoin the Volunteers for practice today after serving suspensions for their Jan. 1 arrests. Coach Bruce Pearl said he decided to reinstate the pair after learning more details from the legal investigation and Tennessee’s student judicial affairs process. Pearl also suspended forward Tyler Smith and center Brian Williams after the four were arrested on misdemeanor gun, drug and alcohol charges in Knoxville.

Returning Star filly Zenyatta will return to the track this year, creating the possibility of a long-awaited showdown with fellow unbeaten Rachel Alexandra. Owners Jerry and Ann Moss had said Zenyatta would retire after becoming the first female to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic with a dramatic last-to-first charge on Nov. 7 at Santa Anita. After watching Zenyatta gallop at Hollywood Park, Moss announced that the 6-year-old will run at some point in 2010.

•Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson returned to the Senators’ lineup after missing 11 games because of a separated left shoulder. Alfredsson, a member of Sweden’s Olympic team, was hurt just before Christmas and was expected to be out between four and six weeks.

Hired The Washington Redskins say the team’s new linebackers coach will be Lou Spanos, who spent the past 15 seasons as a defensive assistant with Pittsburgh. The Redskins also said that Kirk Olivadotti will move from that position to become the team’s defensive assistant. Olivadotti has been with the team since 2000, serving in several coaching capacities.

Traded The Padres and Athletics finalized a four-player trade that sent third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff from San Diego to Oakland. The A’s also acquired minor league infielder Eric Sogard for outfielders Scott Hairston and Aaron Cunningham. The teams had agreed to the deal on Friday, pending physicals.

Agreed Right-handed reliever Nick Masset and the Cincinnati Reds agreed to a $2.58 million, two-year contract, avoiding salary arbitration. Masset went 5-1 with a 2.37 ERA in 74 appearances last season. In two seasons with Cincinnati, the 27-year-old pitcher is 6-1 with a 2.32 ERA.
