Stayed tuned until next season

Baseball: Rockin’ Robin will have to wait until next season, but Florida International shortstop Garrett Wittels can now identify a bit with Joltin’ Joe.

Wittels extended his hitting streak to 56 games on Saturday – the same number of Joe DiMaggio’s major league-record hit streak in 1941 – but the Golden Panthers were eliminated with a 15-9 loss to Dartmouth in the NCAA Coral Gables, Fla., regional.

Wittels hit an RBI double in the first inning, leaving him two games shy of the Division I record set by Oklahoma State’s Robin Ventura in 1987. Wittels’ attempt to break the mark will resume next season.

WIAA boss in online chat

Online chat: Mike Colbrese, the executive director of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, has taken some heat for the recent changes in the state basketball tournament format.

On Monday, Colbrese and readers will get a chance to talk about the recent changes in an online chat at spokesman.com.

For Spokane, and all of Eastern Washington, the change in the state tournaments is dramatic. All of the classifications will continue to compete in a 16-team “state tournament,” but just eight of those teams will actually compete on the final three days at the state tournament site.

Class 4A and 3A teams will be in Tacoma, 2A and 1A teams will be in Yakima, and 2B and 1B teams will be in Spokane. The tournaments will be played on the same weekend.

If you have questions about those state tournaments or anything regarding the WIAA, be sure to check in at spokesman.com/ sportschat at 1 p.m. Monday. You can also submit a question in advance by sending it to sports@spokesman.com.
