Bruce traded to Rams, ready for retirement

NFL: The Rams announced Monday that they have acquired four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Issac Bruce from San Francisco in advance of a retirement news conference on Wednesday.

The ceremonial trade did not include an exchange of players or draft picks, Rams spokesman Casey Pearce said.

Bruce, 37, was chosen in the second round (33rd overall) of the 1994 draft out of Memphis by the Los Angeles Rams and spent the next 13 seasons in St. Louis after the franchise relocated there.

He holds franchise records for receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

Bruce is second all-time in the NFL in receiving yards (15,208), fifth in receptions (1,024) and ninth in receiving touchdowns (91).

Colts likely to reach new deal with Manning: Colts president Bill Polian says he expects to reach a deal with Peyton Manning before the quarterback’s current contract expires.

Manning has won a record four league MVP Awards and one Super Bowl.

Rules violation forced Ravens to cancel camp: The Baltimore Ravens have been ordered by the NFL to cancel their final offseason training camp because of a violation of workout rules.

According to the NFL, the Ravens “violated the rules concerning the intensity and tempo of drills conducted on the club’s organized team activity days.” The league also cited the Ravens for “the length of time spent by players at the team facility” on those days.

Culpepper signs with UFL’s Mountain Lions: Quarterback Daunte Culpepper is still playing professional football, albeit in the United Football League.

The 33-year-old Culpepper, who made five starts and appeared in eight games last season for the Detroit Lions, has signed with the Sacramento Mountain Lions.

Hornets to formally name Williams coach

NBA: The Hornets have scheduled an afternoon news conference today to introduce Monty Williams as their new head coach. He has been an assistant to Portland head coach Nate McMillan since 2005.

UCLA stuns Arizona in softball finals

Softball: Megan Langenfeld hit a game-ending homer in the eighth inning to give UCLA a 6-5 victory over Arizona in the opener of the NCAA Women’s College World Series finals.

Langenfeld, a finalist for national player of the year, homered twice and drove in three runs. Monica Harrison had a two-run double for the fifth-seeded Bruins (49-11).

Mountain West opts to stay put for now

College Football: The presidents of the Mountain West Conference decided not to expand the nine-team league at this time.

Commissioner Craig Thompson said the decision to hold off on expansion is tied to the shake-ups and shifting landscape in some of the nation’s bigger conferences.

Thompson said the decision is not final, and that the board may reconsider once the dust settles in the other conferences.

Romo withdraws from Open qualifier

Golf: Tony Romo has withdrawn from a U.S. Open sectional qualifier after it was delayed for the second time due to bad weather.

Players were going to resume their unfinished second rounds today, but Romo withdrew because he must return to the Cowboys for team practices.

Yuri Foreman needs knee operation

Boxing: Former junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman will need surgery on his right knee after tearing his meniscus and stretching ligaments Saturday night at Yankee Stadium.

Foreman was hurt in the seventh round of his fight against Miguel Cotto, which he lost early in the ninth round.
