Huskies shoot down Pilots
Sami Whitcomb scored 15 points to lead five players in double figures and the Washington Huskies (13-17) breezed to a 75-44 victory over the Portland Pilots (18-13) in the first round of the inaugural 16-team Women’s Basketball Invitational tournament Wednesday in Seattle.
Kristi Kingma chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Huskies.
Lauren Angel led Portland with 14 points.
The Huskies shot 53 percent from the floor in the first half – 19 of 36 – to take a 46-20 lead.
•Gonzaga Bulldogs junior guard Courtney Vandersloot was one of 52 players nominated for the All-America team by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. The list will be pared to 40 finalists on Tuesday and then the 10-player Coaches’ All-America team will be announced on April 3.
Tennessee guard Angie Bjorklund (University) was also nominated.
Baseball
Derek Jones smacked a three-run double in the top of the ninth inning and Brett Jacobs added an RBI single to help the Washington State Cougars (11-4) rally for a 5-2 victory over the Dallas Baptist Patriots (10-7) in nonconference play in Dallas.
Adam Conley (1-0) fired two perfect innings to get the win.
Women’s golf
Idaho sophomore Kayla Mortellaro earned medalist honors and helped the Vandals to a second-place finish at the Northern Migration Invitational in Florence, Ariz.
Mortellaro finished the 54-hole event with a 3-under-par 213. The Vandals fell one stroke short of Texas-San Antonio for the team title.
Men’s basketball
Whitworth senior post Nate Montgomery was named to the NCAA Division III second team and Pirates coach Jim Hayford was tabbed as West District Division III coach of the year, the National Association of Basketball Coaches announced.
Softball
North Idaho College (21-11) is ranked 20th in the first NJCAA poll.
The Cardinals will host No. 1 Salt Lake (31-0) at 1 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday.
Swimming
Whitworth’s Natalie Turner turned in her 10th career All-America finish at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis.
She placed sixth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4 minutes, 56.53 seconds.
