Post Falls in title game
Bri Joseph tripled and homered and Richelle Ashburn allowed one run on one hit as Post Falls (17-9) advanced to the championship game of the 5A State softball tournament with a 7-1 victory over Rocky Mountain (22-8-1) Friday at Twin Falls High School.
Earlier in the day, the Trojans knocked off Timberline 12-2 in five innings behind 18 hits. The Trojans will play the winner of Rocky Mountain and Timberline at 11 a.m. today, needing only one victory for the championship.
In other 5A State action, Amber Hawkes’ two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted Lake City (22-6) to an 8-7 victory over Eagle (20-10) before the Timberwolves were eliminated with a 6-3 loss to Timberline (22-8). Timberline’s Wolves used a two-run home run from Elaine Sperry in the seventh inning to take the win over LC.
•4A: After winning its opening-round game, Lakeland (14-13) fell in back-to-back contests on the second day of the state tournament, losing 14-6 to Kuna (25-4-1) before being eliminated by host Pocatello 6-1. Kuna edged Mountain Home 3-2 to advance to the championship game today, awaiting the winner of Mt. Home (26-3) and Hillcrest (20-13-1).
•3A: Nellie Makings went 2 for 3 with a three-run home run and seven RBIs while striking out eight in a two-hit shutout as Kimberly (28-1) eliminated Kellogg (12-10) from the state tournament with a 12-0 victory at Ramsey Park in Coeur d’Alene. … Kellogg advanced earlier in the day with a 12-7 victory over Intermountain League foe Timberlake (15-12). Jessica Layton led the way with two doubles and five RBIs for the Wildcats. … Fruitland (25-2) will await the winner of Buhl (23-8) and Kimberly for the championship today.
Baseball
After Coeur d’Alene took a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth inning, Centennial (20-9) erupted for 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth, knocking off the Vikings (20-10) 16-9 at the 5A State tournament at Hawks Memorial Stadium in Boise.
CdA will play Rocky Mountain (20-9) today for third place at noon. Centennial faces Timberline (23-6) in the championship game at 6 p.m.
Lewiston (25-3) knocked off Madison (7-17) 11-1 in six innings to reach the consolation championship game against Capital (16-13) at 9 a.m. today.
•4A: Jeff Burdett scored on a single by Dylan Kerbs in the top of the ninth inning as Kuna (15-12) eliminated Lakeland (13-13) with a 6-5 victory in the state tournament at Rodeo Park in Nampa. The Hawks held a 5-1 lead after four innings, but didn’t score again despite having runners in scoring position in every inning.
•3A: John Morris hit a two-run single, scoring Kyle Overland and Casey Rogstad, as Timberlake (14-8) used a three-run rally in the seventh inning to edge Kimberly (14-14) 7-6 in the state tournament at Treasure Valley CC in Ontario, Ore.
Connor Perry, who came in with one out in the first to throw 62/3 innings of two-hit ball, earned the win after allowing one run. The Tigers play South Fremont for the consolation championship at 9 a.m. today.
Tennis
After the first day of the 5A State tournament, no Inland Empire League athletes remain in contention for a state title in Boise. In the mixed doubles bracket, Marian deTar and Dyllin Cady of Post Falls advanced to the consolation quarterfinals and play today against a duo from Capital.
•4A: Kevin Kirby and Sophia Meulenberg of Sandpoint each stayed alive after the opening day of the state tournament, both advancing to the consolation quarterfinals today in Boise. Kirby plays Hillcrest’s Brody Wright, while Meulenberg squares off against Susan Lindley of Bonneville.
Allison Anders and Kalyn Lewis of Moscow also play today in the consolation quarterfinals in the girls doubles bracket.
•3A: The Clark Fork pair of Shania Gustafson and Chelsa Macumber toppled the top-seeded duo of Erika Rohrbacher and Alex Chaney from Parma 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 to earn the state girls doubles title in Caldwell. The championship lifted the Wampus Cats to a second-place finish in the team standings with 25 points, off the pace of Parma, which finished with 62. Coeur d’Alene Charter took ninth.
In the boys team title race, Coeur d’Alene Charter finished seventh with 5.5 points and Clark Fork was eighth.
