Area roundup: Early goal holds up for GU soccer team
Catherine Cullen’s goal in the 11th minute helped Gonzaga’s women’s soccer team beat San Diego 1-0 on Sunday in West Coast Conference play in San Diego.
A corner kick from the left side by Sarah Rhodes found Cullen, who punched in her second goal of the year to give the Bulldogs (8-9-1, 3-2-0 WCC) their third win in four matches. The goal was the third of the season off corner kicks by Rhodes.
• After the teams played to a 1-all tie at halftime, Oregon scored twice in the second half to beat Washington State 3-1 in Pac-10 play in Pullman.
Eileen Maes gave the Cougars (6-11, 1-5 Pac-10) a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.
• Northern Arizona beat Eastern Washington 2-1 on an overtime goal in Cheney to clinch the Big Sky Conference regular-season championship.
Kirsten Fausko scored for the Eagles (2-13-1, 2-4-0 Big Sky), who lost for the fourth time in overtime this season.
• Jenny Novak’s goal with four minutes left in overtime gave Pacific a 2-1 win over Whitworth in a Northwest Conference match in Spokane.
Allie Smith scored in the 87th minute for the Pirates (11-5-1, 9-3-1 NWC) to force overtime.
• Boise State’s Ebie Harris scored 43 seconds into overtime to give the Broncos a 1-0 victory over Idaho in Western Athletic Conference play in Boise.
Despite the loss, the Vandals (13-5, 4-2 WAC) retained the Governor’s Cup because of their regulation win over Idaho State on Sept. 3.
• Jenna Richardson’s unassisted goal nine minutes into the match gave No. 19 Oregon State a 1-0 victory over Washington in Pac-10 play in Seattle. The Huskies dropped to 10-6-1, 3-3-0 Pac-10.
Men’s soccer
Whitworth and Pacific played to a scoreless tie in a Northwest Conference match in Spokane despite the Pirates playing the final 27 minutes of the match down a player after Matt Miller was issued a red card.
Kyle Novak made six saves for Whitworth (8-5-2, 5-4-2 NWC).
Golf
For the second straight year, George Fox rallied to overtake Whitworth on the final day of the Northwest Conference Women’s Fall Golf Classic in Bend, Ore.
The Pirates’ Emily Guthrie shot 82 on Sunday to finish at 159, two strokes out of first place. Whitworth’s two-day total of 667 was eight strokes behind George Fox.
• Whitworth’s men fell to a fourth-place finish at the Northwest Conference Golf Classic in Redmond, Ore., shooting a two-day total of 649. Puget Sound won with a 632. The Pirates’ Jeff Aly and Cameron Whittle both finished at 163 to tie for 12th individually.
Junior hockey
Colton Schell had a goal and two assists as the Nelson Leafs beat the Spokane Braves 5-3 in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
Brycen Fisher scored 2 minutes, 25 seconds into the game for Spokane (10-9-0), and Rance Hughes and Jesse Collins also scored for the Braves.
Rowing
Washington won the men’s eights race in near-record time on the second day of the Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, Mass. The Huskies’ time of 14:00.40 was just a second off the course record.
