Firefighter’s winning barbecue sauce

Tree Top has honored Tony Yuen and Spokane Fire Station No. 13 as the winner of America’s Best Firehouse BBQ Cook-Off.

The recipe for Tony’s Puleihu BBQ Sauce, a Hawaiian family recipe that Yuen makes for the station, helped land the $10,000 top prize in the contest.

The station plans to use the money to purchase equipment and boost its benevolent fund.

Tony’s Puleihu BBQ Sauce

From Tony Yuen, Spokane Fire Station No. 13

3 cups apple cider

1 tablespoon Asian chili paste

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger

1/4 cup light brown sugar

1/4 cup molasses

1/4 cup ketchup

1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

1/4 cup soy sauce

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Brush over meat or vegetables while grilling.
