Mead starts with bang in gymnastics

Senior Victoria Moyer won the uneven bars (9.35 points) and vault (8.9) to lead Mead to the team title during its season-opening Greater Spokane League gymnastics meet at home Thursday.

Moyer (36.3) finished just behind all-around winner Courtney Bray (36.375), a junior from Mt. Spokane. Mead placed four in the all-around top five to score 172.625 points, higher than any Panthers score last season.

Bray (9.1) won the balance beam and Mead junior Cadie Pratt (9.45) took the floor exercise on the way to third place in the all-around (36.125). Mead’s Hannah Bjerkestrand (32.925) and Kendra Sherman (32.675) followed in the all-around.

Mt. Spokane placed second, followed by North Central and Rogers.

Nonleague

East Valley 67, Riverside 33: JT Phelan totaled 16 points and seven rebounds as the host Knights (3-1) defeated the Rams (1-4). EV’s Cole Hofstee and James Brown combined for 23 points. The teams combined for just 14 free-throw attempts.

Kellogg 69, Lakeland 50: Ryan Beggerly and Ryan McDonald scored 16 points apiece and the host Wildcats (4-0) shot 20 of 30 from the line to turn back the Hawks (1-2). Lakeland had two players foul out.

Colfax 59, Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) 44: Brandon Gfeller scored 27 points and Justin Berarducci added 10 rebounds as the visiting Bulldogs opened their season with a win over the Eagles (1-2). Gfeller made 11 of 19 field goals, including three of the Bulldogs’ five 3-pointers, and added six rebounds. The teams combined for just 12 free-throw attempts.

Intermountain League

Priest River 49, Bonners Ferry 38: Cameron Riley scored 15 points and Andrew Huddleston added eight rebounds as the host Spartans (1-4, 1-0) turned back the Badgers (2-1, 0-1). Cole Stelow and Jimmy Koch came off the bench to combine for eight points during the Spartans’ pivotal 15-5 third quarter.

East Valley 60, Riverside 32: Ashley Reynolds and Mallory Munns had eight rebounds apiece and Alex Rankin added five steals to help the host Knights (1-3) defeat the Rams (2-3).

Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) 48, Colfax 37: Jenna Widman totaled 13 points and 15 rebounds, and Tayler Flemming added 16 points and five rebounds as the host Eagles (3-1) defeated the Bulldogs (0-1). Lakeside outrebounded Colfax 42-22 and held the Bulldogs scoreless for the first 6 1/2 minutes of the second quarter. Hannah Harazin had seven rebounds and Misty Skelton added five steals for Colfax.

Coeur d’Alene Charter 42, Kootenai 23: Lexi Turkenburg scored 17 points and had eight of her team’s 14 steals as the visiting Panthers (2-5) defeated the Warriors at Harrison. The Panthers held Kootenai to three field goals in the second half.

Intermountain League

Priest River 42, Bonners Ferry 26: Liz Halcro finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots to guide the host Spartans (4-3, 1-0) past the Badgers (1-2, 0-1). Steffie Pavey added eight steals and Jill Weimer had 10 rebounds for the Spartans.

Wrestling

Mt. Spokane 35, Shadle Park 33: The visiting Wildcats (1-1 GSL) earned the win when the Highlanders (0-2) had to forfeit the final match, at 106. The teams split seven matches as the meet went back and forth. Mt. Spokane led 11-0 after Kiegen Schauer’s 15-0 technical fall at 113 and Jayden Meyer’s pin at 120. The Highlanders bounced back with three consecutive wins, capped by TJ Pajimola’s 5-3 win over Sam Wilkes at 138 to avenge last week’s loss at the Deer Park tournament. Shadle took a 33-29 lead after pins by state veteran Cameron Babcock (220) and senior Tyler Brown (285).

Mead 65, Rogers 7: Britton Bower edged Cameron Jennen 4-3 at 106 during the Panthers’ (2-0) road win over the Pirates (1-1). Dwayne Robinson (220) highlighted Rogers’ night by defeating James Volz 11-5 after trailing 5-1 through two rounds.

Central Valley 47, Lewis and Clark 16: Brady Spillane (152) turned the momentum toward the host Bears (2-0) with an 11-5 win and his brother Cody (170) got a late reversal for a 3-2 win over Dakota Numbers as CV won the last five matches to beat the Tigers (0-2). Lowell Kovacich had a reversal with 15 seconds left for a 7-6 CV win at 220.

University 56, Ferris 12: Kyle Cosby (285) rode out Drew Sharkey in the third overtime to highlight the win for the visiting Titans (2-0) over the Saxons (0-2).

North Central 54, Gonzaga Prep 16: The visiting Indians (2-0) opened with pins by Heber Martinez (285), Johnny Brown (106) and Nathan Boucher (113) to cruise past the Bullpups (0-2).
