Green, Lucas lead Spartans past Badgers

College basketball: Draymond Green scored a career-high 26 points, and Kalin Lucas made three free throws in the final minute of overtime to lift Michigan State to a much-needed 64-61 victory over No. 20 Wisconsin on Tuesday night in East Lansing, Mich.

The Spartans, who have been in a funk for most of the season, scored the final nine points of regulation to tie the game at 53, then outlasted the Badgers (12-4, 2-2 Big Ten) in the extra session. Lucas put Michigan State (11-5, 3-1) up by one with a free throw with 30.2 seconds remaining, and Wisconsin’s Jordan Taylor then missed from near the top of the key.

Lucas, who finished with 17 points, added two free throws with 2.2 seconds left, and Taylor missed a desperation shot from midcourt.

Fredette leads BYU in rout of Utah: Jimmer Fredette scored 47 points and Jackson Emery added 20 points and set BYU’s career steals record as the 11th-ranked Cougars beat Utah 104-79 in Salt Lake City to extend their winning streak to seven games.

Minnesota’s Mbakwe with team despite arrest: Minnesota is sticking with star forward Trevor Mbakwe despite his arrest for allegedly violating a restraining order filed against him.

The university released a statement from coach Tubby Smith on Tuesday confirming that Mbakwe is still with the team, describing the action as “a lapse in judgment” and announcing no punishments. Authorities said Mbakwe sent a message on Facebook to a former girlfriend who had filed the no-harrasment order in August 2009.

Turiaf helps Knicks knock off Blazers

NBA: Amare Stoudemire had 23 points and eight rebounds, Raymond Felton added 17 points and 14 assists, and the New York Knicks beat the Trail Blazers 100-86 at Portland.

Ronny Turiaf had a season-high 19 points and tied a season high with 10 rebounds for the Knicks, who improved to 12-8 on the road, surpassing their road win total from last season. Wilson Chandler added 17 points. Stoudemire has scored at least 20 points in 22 straight games.

LaMarcus Aldridge had 19 points for the Blazers.

Young scores 43 to lead Wizards to win: Nick Young scored a career-high 43 points, and Kirk Hinrich had six in overtime as the Wizards survived a last-minute regulation meltdown to beat the Sacramento Kings 136-133 in Washington.

The Wizards blew a six-point lead in the final 14 seconds of the fourth quarter – and nearly blew a five-point lead in the final half-minute of overtime – and finished the game without starters John Wall and Andray Blatche before finally securing the win.

Lakers blow out Cavaliers: The Lakers humiliated the Cleveland Cavaliers while sending them to their 11th straight loss, rolling to a 112-57 victory at Los Angeles, in their best defensive performance.

Ron Artest and Andrew Bynum each scored 15 points, while Pau Gasol had 13 points and 14 rebounds. Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom and Shannon Brown also scored 13 points for the defending NBA champion Lakers, who led the league’s worst team by 32 points at halftime on their way to winning their fifth in a row.

Polk to stay at UW for junior season

College Football: Chris Polk, the first Washington Huskies running back to rush for 1,000 or more yards in each of his first two seasons, will remain in school for his junior season, his mother Edrena said.

Bobcats’ Davis ruled ineligible: Montana State football coach Rob Ash says the NCAA has declared running back Orenzo Davis ineligible for violating eligibility rules.

Montana State is appealing the decision. Davis led the Bobcats with 1,126 yards rushing during the 2010 season, earning second team all-Big Sky Conference honors.

Bergeron’s hat trick leads Bruins to win

NHL: Patrice Bergeron scored three times for his first career hat trick and Tim Thomas earned his sixth shutout of the season as the Bruins routed the Ottawa Senators 6-0 in Boston.

Brad Marchand and Tyler Seguin each had a goal and an assist and David Krejci added a pair of assists for the Bruins, who picked up right where they left off Monday night, when Boston rallied for four goals in the final 3 1/2 minutes of a 4-2 win at Pittsburgh.

Canucks stay hot, down Islanders: Mason Raymond and Ryan Kesler scored in a shootout, and the surging Vancouver Canucks beat the New York Islanders 4-3 in Uniondale, NY.

Alex Burrows, Kesler and Kevin Bieksa scored for the Canucks in regulation.

Canucks, Blackhawks lead balloting: The Vancouver Canucks and the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks commanded the spotlight when it was announced each club had multiple players picked to the NHL All-Star game roster.

Chicago was already well represented for the All-Star festivities later this month in Raleigh, N.C., as captain Jonathan Toews and defenseman Duncan Keith were among six players voted into the game in fan balloting. They were joined by forwards Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp. The Canucks, who own the NHL’s best record, are sending identical twins Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin, along with Ryan Kesler – their three leading scorers – to the game.

Storm’s Jackson injured in Russia

Miscellany: Lauren Jackson, the Storm’s two-time league MVP, returned home to Australia after suffering an apparent left Achilles injury while playing in Russia.

Storm coach Brian Agler is in contact with the power forward, and said Jackson’s injury is being evaluated and more information could be provided this week.

Vonn continues to struggle: Germany’s Maria Riesch and Finland’s Tanja Poutiainen shared a slalom victory at a World Cup slalom run at night in Flachau, Austria.

Lindsey Vonn, the three-time overall champion, straddled a gate and failed to finish her first run for the fourth straight race. Riesch extended her lead over Vonn in the overall standings to 196 points.

Sportswriter reinstated: A sportswriter for the Kamloops Daily News, who was banned by the Kamloops Blazers and the Western Hockey League over coverage, is being reinstated back to his position after a public outcry.

Gregg Drinnan will continue writing news coverage and columns, as he did before the Blazers sent a letter in late December outlining concerns with coverage and instituting a ban on speaking with the veteran WHL reporter.
