Injured The Boston Red Sox have put struggling reliever Bobby Jenks on the 15-day disabled list after his right arm cramped up during a loss to the Los Angeles Angels. The Red Sox said Jenks (1-2) has a strained right biceps and placed him on the DL retroactive to Monday. The right-hander has a 9.35 ERA in 11 appearances.
Hired UC Davis has hired former Bradley coach Jim Les to take over its men’s basketball program. The school said it would formally introduce Les at a news conference today. Les’ son, Tyler, will be a sophomore at UC Davis this season.
Named Kentucky’s John Calipari has been chosen to coach the national team of the Dominican Republic and try to qualify it for the 2012 Olympics. The team has never qualified for the Olympics.
Charged Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. is facing new misdemeanor harassment charges accusing him of threatening two homeowner association security guards outside his Las Vegas home. The charges filed Thursday in Las Vegas stem from an October dispute over parking with guards in the gated community where the undefeated prizefighter lives.
Signed Florida coach Will Muschamp has finalized his contract. He received a $750,000 signing bonus, making his first year of the five-year deal worth more than $3.25 million. His average salary will be about $2.75 million annually.
Released Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne was released from the Mayo Clinic after being treated for what doctors are calling an inflammatory condition. Roush Fenway Racing said Bayne is expected to return to racing later this season. The 20-year-old Bayne was treated after the April 9 race at Texas after experiencing numbness in his arm while driving. The condition originally was thought to be related to an insect bite.
Honored Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry has won the Joe Dumars Trophy presented to the NBA player who best exemplifies sportsmanship. Curry received 88 of a possible 347 first-place votes from fellow players. Luol Deng of the Chicago Bulls was second with 84 votes and Portland’s LaMarcus Aldridge was third with 56.
