G-Prep standout reaches semifinal

Gonzaga Prep’s Alex Marcinkowski won both of his matches Friday on the first day of the Stae 4A tennis tournament in Richland.

Marcinkowski will play in the semifinals today against Skyline’s Aman Manji. The winner will advance to the title match later in the day.

Marcinkowksi, who took fourth place at last year’s state tournament, opened with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Thomas Jefferson’s Alex Lee.

After dropping the first set in his quarterfinal match against Olympia’s John Stormans, Marcinkowksi rallied to win 5-7, 7-6 (7), 6-0.

Lewis and Clark’s doubles duo of Luke Brittan and Jordan Strandness beat Kentridge’s Aadil Diwan and Randy Huynh 6-3, 6-3 in the first round.

Mead’s Micca Motzer won her first match against Mount Rainier’s Kristina Stevanovic, but was eliminated after losing her next two matches.

Mackenzie Draper, also of Mead, was eliminated after dropping both of her matches.

3A: Mt. Spokane’s Austin Carlen fell in his first two matches and was ousted from the state tournament in Kennewick.

Carlen lost to Lakes’ Jordan Richardson 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round and was eliminated after a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Meadowdale’s Nick Ekern.

2A: Pullman’s Shayla Robinson and Brittani Harvey and Clarkston’s Kianna Arthur and Rachel Folsom won their opening-round doubles matches but fell in the quarterfinals at the state tournament at Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.

Pullman’s Stephanie Her won her opening-round singles match, but was sent to the consolation bracket after a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Bellingham’s Bella Hoyos.

East Valley’s Callie Hanson lost two matches and was eliminated.

In boys doubles, Pullman’s Joseph Chung and Jamison Simanson won their opening match, but fell in the quarterfinals. They’ll play in a consolation bracket today.

After an opening-round loss, Clarkston’s Ryan Adams responded with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 win over Black Hill’s Jimmy Do and will play in the consolation semifinals.

1B/2B/1A: Riverside’s Jaime Aragon won his opening-round match against Bush’s Nick Marchi 6-4, 6-0 and advanced to the quarterfinals at the Yakima Tennis Center in Yakima.

In the girls bracket, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague’s Tracy Melville opened with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Cashmere’s Molly Kenoyer, but was beaten 6-0, 6-0 by Michele Lui, of Forest Ridge, in the quarterfinals.

Melville then went on to beat La Salle’s Margaret Busey 8-3 in an elimination round. She’ll play Chelan’s Megan Robinson today for fourth/seventh place.
