Ware returns, No. 3 Louisville routs Cornell
College basketball: Kevin Ware scored quickly in his return for No. 3 Louisville, and the defending NCAA champion Cardinals posted their school-record 19th straight win, beating visiting Cornell 99-54.
Ware shattered his leg during last season’s Midwest Regional final. He played in an exhibition this season, then sat out the first two games for the Cardinals (3-0).
Ware had five points and two rebounds in 13 minutes. He scored just 17 seconds after checking in with 14:06 left in the first half, splitting defenders on a drive to cap a 20-point run that put Louisville ahead 22-2.
• Prized recuits commit: Cliff Alexander of Chicago’s Curie High School says he’s headed to Kansas. The 6-foot-9 forward chose the Jayhawks over Illinois. … Point guard Tyus Jones, of suburban Minneapolis, and center Jahlil Okafor, Chicago, committed to Duke . Scout.com rates Okafor as the nation’s No. 1 recruit and had Jones at No. 4.
Stewart leads No. 1 UConn past Maryland
Womens basketball: Breanna Stewart scored 26 points, and top-ranked Connecticut showed its depth and quickness against No. 8 Maryland in a 72-55 victory at College Park, Md.
The short-handed Huskies (3-0) used a 13-2 run early in the second half to take a 56-45 lead, and Maryland (2-1) never get closer than nine points. It was Connecticut’s second win over a Top 10 team in a five-day span. The Huskies breezed past No. 3 Stanford by 19 points on Monday.
• Colonials upset No. 10 California: Megan Nipe scored a career-high 31 points and Danni Jackson made a 3-pointer with 3:11 left to put George Washington (2-0) ahead to stay in a 75-72 victory over No. 10 California at Washington.
Reshanda Gray scored a career-high 24 points and Brittany Boyd added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Golden Bears (1-2).
Stenson leads Euro finale by a shot
Golf: Henrik Stenson remained in position to win the European Tour money title, opening a one-stroke lead in the season-ending World Tour Championship.
The Swede had an 8-under 64 to reach 12 under after two rounds on Jumeirah’s Earth Course in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Stenson also leads the Race to Dubai standings. The points champion will receive $1 million from a $3.75 million bonus pool. He is trying to become the second Swede to top the money list.
• Karlsson, Stadler share lead in OHL: Robert Karlsson and Kevin Stadler topped the OHL Classic leaderboard at 12 under when second-round play was suspended because of darkness.
Karlsson played 36 holes Friday, shooting an 8-under 63 in the rain-delayed first round and adding a 67 in the afternoon on Mayakoba Resort’s El Camaleon course in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.
Spokane native Alex Prugh sits at 2-over after completing his first round.
• Three tied for lead in Mexico: Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist and South Korea’s So Yeon Ryu each birdied the final hole for a share of the second-round lead with Thailand’s Pornanong Phatlum in the LPGA’s Lorena Ochoa Invitational.
Nordqvist and Ryu shot 5-under 67 to match Phatlum at 9-under 135 at Guadalajara (Mexico) Country Club. Phatlum, the first-round leader in the 36-player event, had a 69.
Capitals rally to beat Red Wings in SO
Miscellany: Nicklas Backstrom scored the only goal of the shootout, and the Washington Capitals rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in NHL action.
Brooks Laich, and Alex Ovechkin added goals, and Michale Latta scored his first in the NHL for Washington. Braden Holtby made 30 saves.
• Davis Cup final tied: Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Tomas Berdych of defending champion Czech Republic did what was expected of them, winning their matches and leaving the Davis Cup final at 1-1 after the opening day.
Djokovic beat Radek Stepanek 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 in the first singles. Berdych then defeated rookie Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 on the indoor hard court at Belgrade (Serbia) Arena.
• Chan sets record: Three-time world champion Patrick Chan improved his own world record in the short program to take the lead at figure skating’s Trophee Bompard at Paris. The Canadian made a perfectly executed quad toeloop-triple toeloop jump, nailed a triple axel and a triple lutz and finished with a lightning-fast step sequence to score 98.52 points.
