WSU’s Halliday on O’Brien watch list

Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday has been named to the 2014 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award Watch List.

Halliday is one of eight Pac-12 quarterbacks included in the list of 39 student-athletes.

The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback.

Halliday started all 13 games for the Cougars last season, setting a school record with 4,597 passing yards, second-most in Pac-12 Conference history. The Ferris High graduate also set school records for pass completions (449), pass attempts (714) and tied the school record with 34 touchdown passes.

Golf

Two of three Gonzaga golfers competing won their opening-round matches at the Women’s Amateur Public Links championship at The Home Course in DuPont, Washington.

Junior-to-be Raychelle Santos, the 28th seed, beat No. 37 seed Elyse Smidinger of Crofton, Maryland 5 and 3. Eleventh-seeded Tai Jade Kliebphipat, who graduated this spring, beat No. 54 seed Abby Newton of Katy, Texas, 2 and 1.

Senior-to-be Alice Kim, the 51st seed, lost to No. 14 seed Katharine Patrick of West University Place, Texas, in 20 holes.

Santos will face reigning U.S. Girls’ Junior champion Gabriella Then of Rancho Cucamonga, California, who is the fifth seed, today. Kliebphipat faces Cassy Isagawa of Wailuku, Hawaii, the 22nd seed.
