Area roundup: Gonzaga men win match at WCC tennis championships

The ninth-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs men rolled to a 4-0 victory over the eighth-seeded Santa Clara Broncos on Wednesday for their first win in the West Coast Conference Championships tennis tournament in San Diego.

Alvaro Nazal and Nick Kamisar won seven of the final nine games to post an 8-6 win and give the Zags – who split the first two matches – the doubles point.

Sergio Chip, Vladimir Mijatovic and Hayden Smith notched wins in singles play to complete the sweep.

GU takes on No. 1 seed San Diego today.

Women’s golf

Washington State (901) finished 11th at the Pac-12 Championships at Boulder Country Club in Boulder, Colorado.

Freshman Alivia Brown and senior Kristen Rue finished tied for 32nd place with 10-over-par 223s to pace the WSU women.

No. 6 Arizona (853) won the team title, while Oregon’s Caroline Inglis was the medalist at 206.

• Mark Gardner of The Creek at Qualchan won the PNW Senior Players Championship after firing a 64-71–135 to win by two strokes over Mike Gove of Inglewood GC in Kenmore, Washington.

Women’s basketball

Idaho coach Jon Newlee announced that 6-foot-2 post Brigitte O’Neill, of Melbourne, Australia, will play for the Vandals.

Baseball

CC Spokane (22-9, 11-7) and visiting Yakima Valley split a NWAC doubleheader at Spokane Falls CC, with the Yaks winning the opener 6-2 and the Sasquatch taking the nightcap 5-3.

Lucas Denney’s two-run double gave CCS the lead for good in the third inning. Kyler Brooks gave up three runs in six innings for his third win of the season.
