Call of the wild

George Halekas spent his career as a wildlife biologlist, and since retiring from the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, he has continued to work on conservation issues, including wolf management.

He also enjoys the sounds to be found in nature. So he records them and uses them in collaboration with composers and visual artists.

It’s this work he’ll be discussing next month at Eastern Washington University in a lecture co-sponsored by the EWU Honors Program and Humanities Washington.

In “The Roots of Music – Exploring Earth’s Soundscapes to Spark Community Conversation,” Halekas will talk about the origins of music among hunter-gatherer cultures and about his belief in the planet as a sonic jewel. He’ll bring sounds ranging from whale calls and birdsongs to music found in rainforests and African forests.

The free talk will be at noon April 15 in Showalter Hall Room 109 on the Eastern campus in Cheney. For more information, visit www.humanities.org/ calendar-events.
