Beavers sweep series with Cougars

Trever Morrison’s double drove in Christian Donahue in the bottom of the 11th inning and No. 25 Oregon State defeated Washington State 2-1 on Sunday in Corvallis, Oregon.

Donahue led off the inning with a single off reliever Ian Hamilton (0-1), who was working his fourth inning. Hamilton threw away a pick-off throw as Donahue took second before Morrison’s game-winning hit.

The Cougars (12-11, 1-5 Pac-12) tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning when PJ Jones was hit by a pitch and scored on Wes Leow’s double. Leow had three hits and Ian Sagdal two.

The Beavers (18-5, 4-2) swept the three-game series.

• California (18-5, 5-1 Pac-12) racked up 20 hits in an 8-2 over Washington (13-10, 1-5) in Seattle to send the Huskies to their fourth consecutive loss while the No. 24 Bears won for the 13th time in 15 games.

• Cory Mack took a shutout into the ninth inning and pitched the first complete game of the season for Whitworth (14-8, 8-4 Northwest Conference) to beat Puget Sound 11-3 and complete a series sweep in Spokane.

The Pirates moved into third place with their fourth straight victory while the Loggers (10-11, 8-5) dropped to fourth.

Dalton Carter, Jeremy Druffel, Brett Moser and Spencer Locati had two hits each for the Pirates with Druffel and Moser driving in two runs apiece.

• Brett Neighbors had three hits in each game and CC Spokane swept a doubleheader from Clackamas 6-2 and 13-2 at Shadle Park HS to run its win streak to 10 straight.

Evan Douglas added two hits in each game for the Sasquatch (11-2).

Corbin Smith (2-0) went seven innings to pick up the win in the opener over the Cougars (5-8), giving up five hits, a walk and a run while striking out 10.

Zach Haggett (2-0) went six in the eight-inning second game, giving up six hits, two walks and three runs while striking out five.

Spokane opens Eastern Region play on Wednesday at Yakima Valley.  

The Sasquatch are ranked 19th in the American Baseball Coaches Association Pacific Region junior college poll. 

Softball

UCLA (29-5, 5-0) scored five runs in the third and added three in the fifth in taking an 8-4 victory over the Washington Huskies (28-7, 1-3) in Seattle.

Washington pitcher Casey Stangel (7-3) got only six outs and was charged with all five third-inning runs.
