Sunday afternoon, see how cheese is made.

The family-owned Chattaroy Cheese Co. is hosting an open creamery to kick off its summer season. The farm will be open through October.

Sunday’s free event runs from noon to 5 p.m. at 23720 N. Crescent Road. There will be opportunities to tour the farm, meet the goats, buy a goat, sample and purchase cheese, and learn more about Full Circle Equine Rehabilitation Center, a program that aims to place rescued animals in new homes. There will also be live music, face painting and food for purchase from Bistro Box food truck.

Cheesecake support

Spokane Cheesecakes needs votes.

The local cheesecake maker is applying for a $100,000 grant from Chase Mission Main Street Grants. It needs at least 250 online votes by June 19 to be eligible.

Customers and fans can vote at www.MissionMainStreetGrants.com. Twenty grant recipients will be announced in September.

Spokane Cheesecakes, owned by Thomas and Gillian Speight, opened last year at 1420 E. Sprague Ave., Suite 104B. Now, the owners want to expand the business by acquiring a refrigerated food truck and open another location in Spokane as well as maybe Coeur d’Alene.

Spokane Cheesecakes specializes in mini cheesecakes, offering more than 30 flavors but no graham-cracker crusts. Their cheesecake crusts are scratch-made.

This little piggy

“Hog” is Richard H. Turner’s 352-page, hardcover love letter to pork (Mitchell Beazley, $34.99).

It features more than 150 recipes for everything from a whole roast suckling pig and crown roast to glazed ham, pulled pork and meatloaf.
