NFL notes: 12 failed extra points set record

Associated Press

NFL kickers missed like never before Sunday, setting a record with 12 failed extra-point attempts.

Kickers missed left, right, had kicks blocked and hit the uprights. Kickers missed in the wind and indoors. With several games left, kickers already had the most misses in one week since the NFL merger.

The NFL moved extra-point attempts back before last season because the kicks had become routine, and professionals almost never missed. The 20-yard attempt became a 33-yarder. In Week 13 of last season, kickers missed eight. That mark was eclipsed by midafternoon Sunday.

Cincinnati’s Mike Nugent and Robbie Gould of the New York Giants each missed two extra-point attempts.

Streak busted

Adam Vinatieri’s NFL record streak of consecutive field goals ended at 44 when the Colts kicker sailed a 42-yarder wide right against the Titans in Indianapolis.

Green injured

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green significantly hurt his hamstring in the opening minutes of a loss to the Buffalo Bills, the most notable injury on Sunday.

Chicago Bears rookie linebacker Leonard Floyd had the day’s scariest injury. The first-round draft pick from Georgia left on a stretcher with less than six minutes remaining in a loss to the New York Giants. Bears coach John Fox said Floyd injured his neck. The team said Sunday night that Floyd was released from the hospital.

Sack king

Surrounded by his teammates in the locker room, Pittsburgh linebacker James Harrison accepted the game ball as his eyes flooded with tears.

“I was thinking about my father, and how he’s not here for it,” Harrison said.

Harrison, 38, became the Steelers career sacks leader on Sunday as Pittsburgh recorded eight sacks in a win over Cleveland.

For Harrison, the milestone was somewhat bittersweet since it came in the same year that he lost his father, James Sr., who died in May at the age of 76.

His takedown of quarterback Cody Kessler gave him 77 1/2 sacks, moving Harrison past Jason Gildon (77) for the most in Pittsburgh’s storied history.

Quiet debut

No. 1 draft pick Jared Goff had a quiet NFL debut as the Rams quarterback went 17 of 31 for 134 yards passing in a loss to the Dolphins in Los Angeles.
