Area roundup: Gonzaga’s Apollo earns second singles player of the week

From staff and wire reports

Gonzaga sophomore Nevada Apollo has been named West Coast Conference Singles Player of the Week after another unbeaten weekend atop the singles lineup.

Apollo went 2-0 in the Bulldogs final two home duals of the season. Against Saint Mary’s, the Las Vegas native was nearly perfect, winning 12 of 13 games in a 6-0, 6-1 over Saint Mary’s’ Jana McCord. A day later, she downed Pacific’s top player Maayan Sela 6-3, 6-2. Both singles matches paced the Zags to a pair of 4-0 dual victories on the weekend, clinching both an undefeated season at home and a spot in the WCC Championship April 27-29.

The two victories advanced Apollo to 11-3 on the dual season and 20-6 overall in the school year, tying for the team lead. Eight of those wins have come at the top singles position.

This is Apollo’s second WCC Singles Player of the Week award. She also earned it Feb. 14 after another undefeated weekend at No. 1 singles.

Baseball

Gonzaga’s home nonconference game against Seattle U was canceled due to weather and field conditions.

It was to be the first game between the schools since the Redhawks reinstated their program in 2010. No makeup date was announced. The Zags face Portland in a three-game series, their last WCC road series of the season, starting on Friday at 6 p.m.

Softball

The Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader between CC Spokane and North Idaho was postponed until Wednesday at 2 p.m. due to weather and field conditions.

In addition, the NWAC crossover tournament, originally scheduled this weekend in Portland, was changed to April 21-23 to allow teams to make up rescheduled games.
