Police seek felon on the run after fleeing trashed apartment

Police are looking for a man wanted on multiple felony warrants after he fled a Browne’s Addition apartment where he was squatting earlier this week.
Cody L. Burgess, 25, is no stranger to law enforcement. In April, he jumped out a second-story window in an unsuccessful attempt to escape police trying to arrest him on multiple forgery and identity theft charges.
The apartment manager of a building in the 2300 block of West Second Avenue was tipped off by a tenant on Tuesday that people were staying in a basement apartment that was supposed to be vacant. The manager told police he tried to enter the apartment but discovered it was barricaded from the inside. However, he could hear people climbing out of the windows to escape, according to court documents.
Police caught up to and arrested Levi E. Burgess, 30, and Crystiauna D. McLallen, 22, on suspicion of second-degree burglary and second-degree malicious mischief. Cody Burgess was able to escape, though reportedly wearing nothing more than shorts and a pair of socks.
Police spokesman Officer John O’Brien said there may have been people living in the apartment for two or three weeks. The apartment was furnished and the utilities were on. When police arrived, the two-bedroom apartment was piled high with trash.
“They turned a very nice apartment into a trashed apartment,” O’Brien said. “There was no respect for the property.”
It took two truckloads to remove all of the furniture and trash, leaving behind a filthy carpet, dirty kitchen and bathroom, dozens of flies and a funky odor, O’Brien said. Graffiti was also painted on the walls. Damage is estimated at $3,000, which includes replacing the carpet, O’Brien said.
Police also found drug paraphernalia and an airsoft gun that looked like a real firearm.
Cody Burgess is being sought on his three previous warrants in addition to new charges of second-degree burglary and second-degree malicious mischief. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Crime Check at (509) 456-2233.
