Area roundup: Washington State baseball downed by USC

Brad Wegman allowed one run on five hits and four walks over five innings, striking out five, and USC (12-6, 2-0) topped Washington State (10-7, 0-2) 4-2 in the second of a three-game series of Pac-12 play on Saturday in Los Angeles.

Cory Meyer and Blake Clanton had a pair of hits apiece for WSU, which lost its third in a row.

Washington 3-4, Utah 1-3: Levi Jordan walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th and the No. 23 Huskies (12-6) swept a doubleheader with the visiting Utes (9-8) in Seattle.

Jack Meggs hit a two-run shot and Noah Bremer went seven shutout innings with eight strikeouts in the first game.

Gonzaga 9, Pacific 0: Justin Vernina threw eight scoreless innings and the Bulldogs (8-9, 2-0) shut out the visiting Tigers (9-9, 0-2) for the second day in a row in West Coast Conference action.

Vernina gave up three hits and two walks, striking out nine. Casey Legumina pitched a perfect ninth to finish. Jake Vieth and Jace VanDeBrake clubbed homers.

Pacific Lutheran 15-10, Whitworth 6-3: The Pirates (9-8, 3-7) dropped a Northwest Conference doubleheader to the visiting Lutes (14-3, 12-2).

Matthew Nelson went 3 for 3 with a three-run homer in the second game and Nate Lamberty drove in three in the first game.

CC Spokane 5, Clackamas 3: Isaac Wersland hit a two-run home run, his third of the season, and the Sasquatch (2-5) beat the Cougars (0-5) in a nonconference game.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out with no reschedule information available.

Softball

Washington 6, Arizona State 4: Kirstyn Thomas and Morganne Flores totaled for six RBIs off four hits and the No. 6 Huskies (22-3) beat the visiting Sun Devils (19-6) in the Pac-12 opener for both teams in Seattle.

Huskies starter Taran Alvelo (13-1) went the distance and struck out seven.

Lewis & Clark at Whitworth (ppd): The doubleheader was rained out and rescheduled for Monday at noon.

CC Spokane 11-11, Yakima Valley 12-7: The Sasquatch (8-2, 3-1) split an Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader against the Chukars (4-6) in Ontario, Oregon.

CCS scored six runs in the seventh in the second game. Ashlynn Bocook and Hannah Anderson both homered in the first game. Bocook finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs and her sixth homer.

TV scored four in the seventh to steal the first game.

North Idaho at Blue Mountain (ppd): The doubleheader was rained out and no reschedule information was available.

Swimming

Eben Schumann closed out the 2017 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships with a 48th place finish in the 100-yard freestyle at the Conroe ISD Natatorium in Shenandoah, Texas.

Track and Field

Washington State’s CJ Allen, Cole Smith and Atina Kamasi won their events Saturday at the USC Trojan Invitational at Loker Stadium/Cromwell Field on the USC campus in Los Angeles.

Allen won the men’s 400m hurdles in a solid season-opening time of 50.43 seconds. Allen, a 2016 second team All-American, has a lifetime-best time of 50.16.

Smith won the men’s javelin with a heave of 216-feet 7 inches (66.01m), a five-foot PR achieved on his final throw of the day.

Freshman Atina Kamasi, won the women’s javelin at 155-6 (47.39m) – 10th best school history.
