Area roundup: CC Spokane swept by Big Bend in softball doubleheader

Ember Armstrong went 3 for 3 with an RBI for Big Bend in the second game and CC Spokane (18-18, 9-17) was swept by the Vikings (12-19, 9-14) 2-1 and 7-2 in a Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday.

In the opener, Shayla Baker limited CCS to one run on three hits in a compete game with three strikeouts. Spokane’s lone run came on a solo homer by Kayla Howes.

Tennis

The Idaho Vandals men’s and women’s tennis teams are headed back to the NCAA Tournament. The men return to the tournament for the second time in three seasons, while the women will be making their fourth straight appearance.

The 2017 Big Sky champions will both head to Stanford, California, to do battle with the Cardinal. The Stanford men earned the No. 16 seed, while the women come in at No. 7. The men will play on Friday, May 12, while the women open on Saturday, May 13.

The Vandal men (16-7) won its second Big Sky Championship in the last three years last weekend. Second-seeded Idaho defeated No. 4 Montana 4-0 to advance to the national tournament.

The Vandal women (16-7) secured their fourth straight conference title, defeating top-seeded Northern Arizona 4-3.

Track and Field

Maggie Nelson of CC Spokane finished second in women’s heptathlon at the Northwest Athletic Conference Multi Event Championships in Eugene.

Katie Collins placed third, Anna Carett finished fifth and Isable Clark was sixth.

In men’s decathlon, Spokane’s Tyler Blakeley finished third, with Sam Roddewig fourth, Sam Schafer fifth and Randy Jones sixth.
