Here’s some good news for poke lovers.

The new poke bar is up at running at My Fresh Basket. Wednesday was the first day.

Poke is a cubed, raw fish dish often made with yellowfin tuna and popular in Hawaii, where it originated. Other ingredients generally include soy sauce, sesame oil, green onion, furikake seasoning, wasabi, avocado, and roe, or fish eggs.

Walk into any grocery store in Hawaii and you’ll find it in the seafood or deli sections.

But that’s not the case on the mainland.

Still, for the past five years or so, poke has been gaining popularity in the contiguous United States, where it has been popping up on restaurant menus and trendy food lists around the country.

My Fresh Basket, which opened over the summer in the Kendall Yards development, has been selling a couple of kinds of poke at its seafood counter. Now it has a more comprehensive poke bar. Offerings are made in-house daily.

The 28,000-square-foot grocery store with an urban vibe offers locally made and specialty products.

My Fresh Basket is at 1030 W. Summit Parkway. Call (509) 558-2100. On the web: www.myfreshspokane.com.
