Chiefs give up four in second period, lose to Winterhawks

Ryan Hughes had back-to-back scores to lead a four-goal rally in the second period, and the Portland Winterhawks (5-1) ran away with a 7-2 win over the visiting Spokane Chiefs (4-3) on Sunday night.

Conor MacEachern led the four-goal frenzy with a score nearly four minutes into the period, and Skyler McKenzie followed with a power-play shot roughly three minutes later.

Spokane fell behind 2-0 after only six minutes of play. Riley Woods got the Chiefs on the board with his fourth goal of the season off a pass from Jaret Anderson-Dolan, cutting Portland’s lead to 2-1 heading into the second period.

The Winterhawks built their lead to as much as 7-1 in the third before the Chiefs found the net one last time.

Eli Zummack capped Spokane’s scores with a goal late in the third off an assist by Jake McGrew, his first assist as a Chief. It was Zummack’s second net of the season.

The Chiefs missed six power-play opportunities against Portland. They are currently 1 for 33 in power plays this season.
