News services

Mitchel Matson pitched six innings and the Mt. Spokane Wild overcame a late 3-1 deficit Thursday to defeat the Kennewick Phantoms 4-3 at Shadle Park’s Jackson Field to win the American Legion State AA baseball tournament.

Mt. Spokane scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Colter Kincaid pitched the seventh to earn the save as the school captured its first Legion state title.

Tommy Madill had two of Mt. Spokane’s seven hits. Jeter Schuerman added two hits, including a double.

The Wild scored the tying run in the sixth on Zane Baker’s safety squeeze. The go-ahead run came courtesy of a Kennewick infield error.

The Phantoms put the tying run at second base with no outs in the seventh, but the Wild pulled off a flyout/double play. Mt. Spokane capped the win by throwing out a Kennewick batter attempting to steal second base.

The Wild finished 6-1 at the tourney by winning their final six games.

The AA level does not have a regional tournament.
