Area roundup: Washington State’s Derek Bayley places second at Bandon Dunes men’s golf championship

Derek Bayley’s runner-up finish Tuesday led Washington State’s men’s golf team to third place at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Oregon.

Bayley shot a final-round 5-under-par 71 to complete three rounds at 12-under 201, one shot behind Arizona State’s Chun An Uy.

The Cougars finished at 841 to trail champion ASU (824) and Clemson (837) in the 14-team field.

Gonzaga (855) placed seventh and Idaho (901) was 14th.

Baseball

Oregon 6, Gonzaga 3: Daniel Patzlaff and Spencer Steer had two-rund doubles during a six-run seventh to help the Ducks (12-4) overcome a 3-0 deficit and defeat the Bulldogs (9-6) in nonconference play in Eugene.

Gunnar Schubert, Jace Vandebrake and Nick Nyquist had RBI singles for the Bulldogs.

Hockey

The Spokane Chiefs announced that forward Sean Gulka signed a Western Hockey League Standard Player Agreement and will join the team as an affiliated player for the rest of the season.

Gulka played in 50 regular-season games with the Langley Rivermen of the British Columbia Hockey League this season, totaling 12 goals and 13 assists.

The Chiefs also announced that goaltender Bailey Brkin has been recalled. Brkin played four games with the Chiefs in January and finished the season with the Lloydminster Bobcats of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.
