The city of Spokane’s Community Court will reopen next week but without the social service providers that are a hallmark of its restorative-focused operation.

Closed in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Community Court will reconvene with new protections and rules in place, according to an announcement released by the city on Tuesday.

Only defendants with a scheduled appearance will be allowed inside the court – they cannot bring family or friends. Inside, only court staff and legal representatives will be present, according to the city.

Community Court exists to divert low-level criminal offenders in the city of Spokane toward rehabilitative social services instead of jail.

Previously, a person did not need a scheduled court appearance to utilize the services assembled within the Community Court, which included resources for housing and access to healthcare. Those providers will not be present until further notice.

Defendants will be required to wear masks and will have their temperature checked before entering the court.

Anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 or an illness is asked to call the court ahead of their appointment and reschedule.

The first day of Community Court is Monday at the Northeast Community Center, followed by June 30 at Spokane City Hall.

Although City Hall will be open for Community Court, it remains closed to the public.
