A reported drive-by shooting Wednesday turned into a police chase, with the suspect crashing into a Spokane police car before officers arrested him, police said.

Carl W. Lindsey, 48, was booked into the Spokane County Jail on suspicion of attempt to elude police, felony hit-and-run and resisting arrest, according to a Spokane Police Department news release.

Officers responded about 4 p.m. to Maxwell Avenue and Howard Street near North Central High School for a report that a man was shooting a handgun from a black pickup truck.

As officers flooded the area, 911 received additional calls about a man displaying a firearm in an “alarming manner” at various locations, including Ash Street and Maxwell, in west Spokane.

Officers located the truck a short time later in the downtown area and attempted to stop it. The man drove away, and officers pursued him. Spokane Regional Air Support Unit monitored the fleeing truck from above as officers on the ground stopped their pursuit.

Lindsey crashed into a Spokane police car in the area of Whistalks and Government ways. He continued to drive recklessly before crashing a short distance away, officers said. Officers detained Lindsey after he got out of his truck and ran.

Officers seized Lindsey’s vehicle, and additional charges are possible.

Lindsey made his first appearance Thursday in Spokane County Superior Court and is set for an arraignment Tuesday. He remained in jail Thursday afternoon in lieu of a $20,000 bond.
