In brief: Boys and Girls receives award

Boys & Girls Clubs of America in Spokane County recently received national recognition for its 2007 Comprehensive Marketing Strategy. The club received the bronze Marketing and Communication Award for its Comprehensive Marketing Strategy out of all Boys & Girls Clubs with an operating budget of $500,000 or less in the country. The award was based upon marketing goals and objectives, as well as program results. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Spokane County was recognized out of more than 4,300 clubs across the country that were eligible for the award.

In brief: Dinner benefit for leukemia patient

The friends of Elizabeth Bradfish will hold a fundraising dinner for her Saturday at 5 p.m. at Northwest Christian School, 1412 W. Central Ave. Bradfish is scheduled to receive a bone marrow transplant June 10 in Seattle for treatment of leukemia.

In brief: Eloika Lake group plans yard sale

The nonprofit Eloika Lake Association will hold its annual yard sale to help raise money for ongoing lake restoration takes. The sale is set for Friday through Monday at the intersection of Highway 2 and Oregon Road north of Riverside in Elk. A silent auction will be held for a 1985 Lincoln Towncar and bidding begins at $500. There is also a summerlong raffle for a 9-1/2-foot Legacy Featherlite kayak, paddle and life jacket package which will be on display at the yard sale. Many donated household and garden items will be available from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. all three days.

In brief: Greenacres Elementary hosts art event

Greenacres Elementary, 17915 E. Fourth Ave., will hold its annual Art on the Green Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. This annual celebration of the arts includes student art on display as well as musical and circus performances. The event also includes a silent auction. Hot dogs, chips and beverages will be available for purchase.

In brief: Mobile home park talks break down

Mediation between the city of Cheney and Thomas Myers, the owner of the Myers Mobile Home Park, and their attorneys has broken down and the city plans to continue with pending litigation in the matter of the mobile park meeting the city development, building and fire code regulations. According to previous stories in The Spokesman-Review, the city ordered Myers to put in three fire hydrants in 2006 or close the park in a civil infraction order.

In brief: Repaving closes Spokane Street

Spokane Street is now closed between 16th and 19th Avenues as Post Falls street crews work to repave it. The closure will happen intermittently and drivers should seek alternate routes if possible. A detour is in place from 15th Avenue to 20th Avenue via Compton Street.

Jeff Harris gets fired up about pottery

MEDICAL LAKE – Jeff Harris and pottery have been together since 1981, when he began his business, Color in Clay. Just two years earlier he took his first lesson and discovered he was a natural. "I took a class and fell in love," says Harris. "I wanted to learn how to throw because it was so difficult, and I just had an affinity for it, immediately."

Jugglers come out to play

A surprising new group made its debut in the Junior Lilac Parade this year: jugglers. Nineteen of them tossed rings, clubs and beanbags as they marched. The Lincoln Heights Juggling Jags and the Chase Juggling Chargers combined forces for the event, securing first place in the individual/group category. The clubs are the creation of local teachers and juggling enthusiasts Daniel and Patty Sparks.

Kite Fest will fly high in Liberty Lake

Flowers are blooming, spotting gardens and yards with specks of color. Saturday, the skies over Liberty Lake's Pavillion Park will also be specked with color as dozens of kites take flight for the city's second annual Kite Fest. Children and the inner child in everyone are urged to attend.

LC sets high marks at state track meet

Eleanor Siler of Lewis and Clark won the 4A state 400-meter title by what amounts to a mile in the one-lap race, a full second over the second-place finisher. Her time of 55.62-seconds ties her for 22nd on the list of the fastest 400 runners in state history.

Homeowners lack of empathy shocking I was amazed to read about Paul Shields' total lack of empathy for the feelings of his neighbors and his blatant disregard for the community that he is ruining by building his showcase monstrosity. He calls his neighbors predators who are after him because they think he is extremely wealthy, but does not seem to be able to put himself in our position and imagine how he would feel if this was happening to him.

Lions schedule free health-care day

The Lions Health Screening Unit will again be rolling into Rathdrum to take part in a Health Care Day for area residents on June 18. Sponsored by the Rathdrum Lions Club, the LHSU will provide free health screenings for blood pressure, glaucoma, diabetes, vision and hearing. Other health-care professionals will provide screenings for osteoporosis and skin cancer, and mammograms will be offered for women who have met the qualifications of need and are pre-registered. All screening and testing will be free.

Marrow donor program drive Saturday

People can register this Saturday for the National Marrow Donor Program Registry during a benefit at Valley Rockwood Clinic. Organized in support of Teresa Seely, who has leukemia, and her family, the 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. benefit is scheduled in the west parking lot of the clinic at 14408 E. Sprague Ave. and will include a barbecue, car wash and raffles.

Middle school moves on

The students and staff who've attended or worked at Mead High School and later Mead Middle School at 12509 N. Market St. will get a last chance to peek inside during a closing reception on June 12 at 6:30 p.m. A new Mountainside Middle School at 4717 E. Day-Mount Spokane Road will open in September, leaving the old building available for other uses.

NC champs keep goals on track

The State 3A boys track championship North Central clinched Saturday at Edgar Brown Stadium in Pasco was predicted months before. "Coach kept encouraging us all year," junior distance runner Leon Dean said. "He told us if everything went right we had a chance to score 90 to 100 points, so when things went wrong, we still had all those points for a cushion."

Perennial candidate challenging Reed

OLYMPIA – Until this week, the state's top election official – a guy who spends a lot of his time touting the importance of voting and civic involvement – had no one running against him. Not anymore. On Saturday, Clifford Mark Greene, chairman of a fledgling political party called the Party of Commons, has filed campaign finance paperwork to challenge Secretary of State Sam Reed.
