The Slice For Protection In The Big City…

Nikki Sauser heard this exchange in a gift shop up in Nelson, B.C.

“How does Jessie like her new apartment?”

“Oh, she likes it fine. But it’s not really an apartment. It’s actually a condom.”

Slice answers: Spokane disease is an affliction that causes people to overrate the ideas and opinions of those whose principle claim to wisdom is that they happen to be from out of town, said one reader.

According to others, its symptoms range from a baseless inferiority complex to apathy. Various driving offenses and the love of voting against things also came up.

Our own theory is that it causes people to assume everyone has the same attitudes and interests as themselves. And we admit it. We’ve suffered from a bout or two.

But one caller suggested we just misunderstood the conversation we overheard. Said the reader: “The guy probably said ‘Spokane diocese.”’

In the matter of whose face should go on the penny if the Inland Northwest printed its own money, most nominations involved local politicians we’ll just refer to here as the usual suspects.

Several readers who neglected to leave their names and numbers mentioned Spokane area business leaders whose guts the callers seem to hold in particularly low esteem.

But one reader said Ferris High basketball coach Wayne Gilman’s image should grace the INW dollar bill. Another named a former Spokane mayor, the late Jim Chase.

And STA led about a dozen nominees in voting for the fleet with the worst drivers. That’s not really fair. But you know what they say.
