Huckleberries: From Dante’s Peak to Center of the Universe

Now just a darn minute, says Rick Shaffer, the prime minister of historic Wallace, Idaho. “Dante’s Peak” may not have received critical acclaim, but it was fun. Yes, Rick said, he received his “2 minutes of fame” as an extra on the set of “Dante’s Peak.” And, yes, Rick is the prime minister of the Shoshone County seat by official proclamantion of the City Council.

Huckleberries: Former CdA streets chief retired with his February magic

In February 1985, retired Coeur d’Alene streets director Reid Walker was relaxing at his cabin, enjoying the heavy snowfall, and amused that his replacement had to call out the snow plows to deal with snowy city streets. During Reid’s tenure at the city, it snowed in February. But a warming chinook would follow to thaw the snow. Reid said he never called out the snow plows in February.

Twenty years ago this month, the Washington Legislature passed the first of two bills “defending” marriage from gay people. Five years ago this month, the Washington Legislature became the first state in the country to repeal its Defense of Marriage Act and pass marriage equality. Voters affirmed that legislation in a referendum later that year, and counties began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Within three years, the Supreme Court established marriage as a right for all people.
