Resolve to save New Year’s Day customs

Fresh from their alarming war on Christmas, the godless heathens are taking aim at our sacred New Year's Day customs. I call on all patriotic Americans to rise up and defeat this nefarious plot. Radical atheists will insinuate that we opinion leaders have ginned up the battle over New Year's to draw your attention away from the mounting death toll in Iraq, the lagging reconstruction of New Orleans, rampant corruption in Congress, staggering federal deficits and reverse-Robin Hood fiscal policies that would bring tears of joy to Marie Antoinette's eyes.

‘Shield’ Season 4 outshines field

DVD pick of the week: "The Shield" had a terrific fourth season earlier this year, and now you can get it on DVD (Fox, 13 episodes, four discs, $59.98). The series follows a troubled, often-corrupt cop, Vic Mackey (played by Michael Chiklis). But in the fourth season, he struggled to get back on the good side of law and order, with help from a new captain (Glenn Close). And he did so while battling a smooth, smart new gang leader (Anthony Anderson).

Strap on this guitar and play along – if your timing is good

Air guitarists, unite! Red Octane's new PlayStation 2 music game offers a reversal of fortune for the oft-maligned art of playing imaginary instruments to hard rock, turning it into one of the best PS2 titles of the year. Shipping with a guitar controller, complete with five fret buttons and a lever that you grab like a guitar pick to simulate strumming, the $70 "Guitar Hero" bundle is the closest many gamers will get to appearing on stage with Franz Ferdinand, who contributes the hit "Take Me Out" to the game's incredible soundtrack. The game is merciful at first, easing players into simpler tracks that teach how to follow on-screen chords by pressing fret buttons. Soon, the whammy bar is put into play, which helps tweak notes and juice up a power meter.

Stylin’ on the slopes

Don't let the cold fool you – The white snow on the ski hills is a perfect canvass for a fashion show. But whether those carefully chosen outfits are practical is another matter. "The young kids drive the style," said Rick Brown, formerly an employee at the now-defunct Lou Lou's Ski Shop in Spokane and currently the director of the ski school at 49 Degrees North. Ski and snowboard fashions are a slowly evolving cycle. This year, jackets, pants and even goggles featuring printed patterns like plaids or argyles are popular, Brown said. The latest fashions are, not surprisingly, found at some of the more upscale resorts, but many locals have their own unique style on the slopes. Donning a red Santa hat with leopard print fringe, a denim work jacket, camouflage hunting pants and leather work gloves, Scott Austin said, "This is what happens when someone takes your snowboarding stuff out of the car overnight." Austin, a 42-year-old worker at Spokane Tin and Sheet Iron and a self-proclaimed "snowboarder extraordinaire," said he could care less what he wears, just as long as he is having fun – and staying warm. That attitude is common among more aged skiers, Brown said. "With the kids, it's more style than technical," he said. "The adults want both."

Upcoming ‘Starcraft’ seems to live up to Blizzard legacy

At Blizzard's recent BlizzCon, we were able to go head-to-head with thousands of other fans and developers in "Starcraft: Ghost" multiplayer, and what we played was enough to restore our faith in the long-delayed project. At this point, with the sure hand of the former Swingin' Ape Studios (now part of Blizzard) at the helm, it's clear that "Ghost" is well on its way to living up to the Blizzard legacy. The four playable unit types for each of the three factions in objective-based multiplayer make sure that everyone knows that this is "Starcraft." Yes, that's right, you'll be able to play as your choice of Terran, Protoss or Zerg online.

Will Seattle’s Ali and the new ‘Bachelor’ hit it off?

Page Kennedy, the cellar dweller fired from "Desperate Housewives" amid rumors of inappropriate flashing, is defending himself via rap in a song titled "Trapped in the Basement (Chapter 1 of 5)." Oh, calm down, R. Kelly, it's really called "Hold On." But I am not kidding about the lyrics:

XBOX + HDTV

Bacon of the Month club may sate holiday cravings

Not long ago, my wife came walking into the kitchen and found me at the sink with my back to her. I glanced furtively over but didn't turn around. "You're eating the bacon raw again, aren't you?" she said. I had no choice but to 'fess up. Besides, it's not really raw; it's cured and smoked, after all. But I couldn't help myself. I'm a bacon fanatic, and this was no ordinary bacon. It was Bacon of the Month Club bacon, and I simply couldn't wait.

Console extras not all needed

With the release of any new console, peripheral manufacturers scramble to release add-ons – some unnecessary, some not – in hopes of being caught in what's affectionately called "launch goggles." (This is when the excitement causes a gamer, wrapped up in the moment of getting a new system, to overspend on games and extra gear.) The Xbox 360 is surrounded by no shortage of goodies, but if the goggles are in effect, consider GelTabz rubber nubs ($5.99) that snugly fit over the analog sticks of the 360 controllers. They make an already comfy controller feel better, especially when held in a death grip while smashing trolls in "Kameo" or dropping Nazis in "Call of Duty 2." GelTabz also fit PlayStation 2 and Xbox controllers. Cable TV
